I am a veteran of the basic game, but I am curious how to start and spread a new region. I tried to start one, but it's hard to advertise and I hate those regions that send telegrams to you. Is there any way less annoying to begin your new region?

No. There's only posting here and sending telegrams. Although, if you have an article on NSWiki, or if you roleplay, someone might happen upon your region and decide to move there.

perhaps if anyone is interested in joining mine. I'm not sure whether anyone hasa bird-related nation. Is there a serch facility in the game?
There doesn't appear to be. Perhaps we should tag our nation with relevant keywords. Would help find similar nations.

well...you could do the message on the feeder (+Laz and RR) RMB's...but then, most residents of the feeders aren't a big fan of them...and you can only post it once (per region) every 24 hours

That is something that has interested me in this game, how does a large, active and thriving, user-created region that carries on this way come about ?

I would suggest advertising and promotion are important but you have to have something worth "buying" (or in this case joining and participating in).
A recent Survey (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=536452) shows that Nation Cultivation and Roleplaying are favoured aspects of this game, and that Region participation and Forum activity are also important. So i'd say catering for these aspects would be crucial to building a successful region.
