Advice on building a nation website

I messed around with NS a while ago but a friend reminded me about it the other day and I am now getting seriously addicted. I would really like to expand my experience by creating a website for my nation. Can any one advise me as to how I get some free web space to do this, what sort of information I should be including and any noobish errors to avoid. Thanks.

Edit: Please..isn't there anyone who can give me a little advice?

Bump

Not 1 reply? Maybe I'm spoiled from other forums or this 1 is particularly slow but I would have expected at least 1 person who has made a site for their nation to have seen this by now. :headbang:

Try NSwiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)?

(and yup, this forum's extreme lightly used)

Yeah, check the NS Wiki site, it give you all you need to create a site for your nation. Mine is still a work in progress, but it's in my signature, so you can check it out there.

I've seen some very professional nation maps and was wondering if anyone can recommend a way for me to produce one for my nation?

I do remember at one time that there was a "NationStates Map Service", but I haven't seen them do anything lately.

Although I myself used MSPaint. Although I am thinking of making a new, more detailed map, in Photoshop but I keep putting that off cause of other projects and my job.

Just to let people know I've found a programme called SmartDraw which amongst other things can be used to make some very professional maps. So far I've only used it to edit "real" maps but I'm sure you can make your own as well.

I can see why this forum is so lightly used..slow topics get dropped from the boards far too quickly. Do I really need to come back and bump this every day? It could turn into a useful thread given a bit of time, but if it keeps getting dropped how is it meant to build?

You have your settings such that you only see the last day's worth of topics. Go into the UserCP and change your board settings so you see topics in the past, as most people do. Then you get to see the history.

I've found another really useful looking app..Campaign Cartographer, it's got a map builder and can be used to design cities and generally geared up to help with role play gaming. I've not explored it fully yet but it really looks like a must have to me! ;)

OK so still no real advice other than look at the wiki (thanks for that though I'd not heard of it before)
Are most people just not interested in doing this? I was hoping this could some day turn into a useful little guide to building nation sites but I guess it's not to be. :(

Here is link to one of the better mapping tools.

There probably haven't been many responses because, to my knowledge, most NS players don't set up websites for their nations (or set up only very basic ones). I've only seen a few "national" websites out there, honestly. I'm working on one for Altanar, but it's slow going because I don't have a lot of spare time to work on it.

If you find the Wiki format to be too liming, you could try Freewebs (http://members.freewebs.com/) or Google Page Creator (pages.google.com/).

I haven't piddled around much in each (you can see my half-hearted attempts at making pages for two of my NS nations in my sig), but they're both fairly intuitive and gives you a bit of webspace to fool around in. Neither of them are particularly powerful but still worth a gander.
