New to NationStates

hi everyone. I'm new to this game. So far I'm pretty intrigued. Right before I found this, I burned through all the DVDs of West Wing so of course after watching Martin Sheen I think that I could be President. Luckily, NationStates gives me the opportunity to live out my deluded fantasy without harming anyone's real life.

So after a few days, my first wish is to get more than two issues per day. As a lazy college student, I have way too much free time on my hands.

My other question is about my nation's population. Does it just grow over time, or do I have to influence it? Also, is there a guide online somewhere that's more comprehensive than the FAQ on the main page?

Two issues per day is currently the upper limit, partly because there's only a limited number of different issues been approved so far (just over 200, I think) and so the faster people go through them the more likely they are to get repeats...
But you could also get involved in the UN, get involved in a region's affairs (either where you currently are, or by moving to a smaller region where you'd have a proportionately louder voice... such as Conservative Paradise Reborn (http://www.nationstates.net/region=conservative_paradise_reborn), which your style of national government would seem to fit quite nicely, for example), try creating new issues yourself (although you can't submit them until your population reaches 500 million), RP in the 'NationStates' & 'International Incidents' forums (for example, in the former, by sending a national team to the Summer Olympics...), and so on...

Population growth: +1 million per day for 5 days, then +2 million per day for 5 days, then + 3 million per day for 5 days, and after that you get anywhere from +5 million to +8 million people per day (determined randomly, day by day); nothing that you do can influence this...

There is more here then issues. Like NSG, for example. Or the RP forums. But if you want to start RPing, be sure not to do it like this guy (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=522958).

Join a region, make some friends, and chat on forums thats your best plan of action in my opinion ;)

Join a large, experienced region not a small one.

I recommend any of The Pacifics, The New Meritocracy, Lazarus, The Rejected Realms, Europe, Taijitu, The Lexicon or Gatesville.

But if you have any other specific questions then we would be happy to help.

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly.
So, it seems joining a region is the thing to do. The only problem is that I'm kind of overwhelmed by the sheer number of them. I guess I'll have to devote some time this weekend to going through the list.

I'm kind of excited to see that my nation ranks as "world benchmark" in civil rights. Of course that sounds good, but is there a list where I can see the full range of rankings? it's the little things like that that I'm confused about...

Yes, thery're explained in this post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=392208), which is in the stickied thread at the top of this forum.

I'd reccomend not the Pacifics. I would second The New Meritocracy, but Gatesville is strongly a personal thing--not every nation is welcome there.

You would be more than welcome in my region, Capitalist Alliance. (http://nationstates.net/Capitalist_Alliance) We're looking for new players who want to get the most out of NationStates. We're the result of a new merger, so we have a lot of open positions (Secretary of Diplomacy, Secretary of Security, Secretary of Administration, etc.)

Not the Pacifics? But they're so much fun!

Another thing to do if you've got way too much time on your hands is make an NS Wiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)page about your nation (the way I will ... one day ... when I get around to it ...).

If you venture into the UN, show off your delegation here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=507615), enjoy some in-group creativity here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=454487), drink up here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=310853), and poke cruel but enjoyable fun at the less gifted -- no, I mean, improve the standard of resolutions by exposing follies -- here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=397276).
