Changing industry-related national statistics?

I just joined this site yesterday and created my nation. I am happy with how it turned out for the most part, although I don't really like that my nation's principal industries are "woodchip exports, furniture restoration, and gambling." That's a bit wimpy, isn't it? :(
Do the industry-related statistics change as my nation evolves? Do my answers to the Issues drive any change in this department? Or am I stuck with these useless-looking (though apparently successful) industries?
I'd really like to become a powerhouse in the Information Technology sector in particular, so any hints about how to achieve this would be much appreciated!

Hmm, Info tech is the only real industry in my nation.
Maybe if you do your best to keep the ecosystem in your area pristine, it would push your industry away from the woodchip trade.
And I believe promoting education might help to usher in the Info tech.
Crime is a major problem? Perhaps enforcing more law&order would help to eliminate the gambling industry.

Certain issues can boost or reduce the various industries of a nation. Being a new nation, it will take time, but it's certainly possible to raise your IT sector.

Why does it seem that I get the same issues over and over and don't really have any kind of industry. It doesn't make sense that i don't have.

I think the current industries are good, we have enough industry rated ones, I would like to see some more rankings added in other areas though.
