Debut Issue of the Nationstates Newspaper

Angels World

This has been a work in progress, and I wanted to post the first issue here for feedback and to give everyone an idea of what is going on. There's not nearly as many articles as I would have hoped, but we're just starting out and it will take time to adapt all the features and ideas that have been suggested into the paper.

April Fools
By Angels World
People, I was more than thrilled to see the thread announcing a new update for Nationstates. I remember thinking how nice it would be to have a few new features to go along with what was already here.

It was April 2nd, and I was browsing the forums for something interesting to get involved in, when I saw the thread for version 1.10. No doubt most people had already figured out that it was an April Fools prank, but I’d been gone for a few days and had no idea what was going on.

Among the features listed in the thread were improved turnover time for issues and complaints, due to a new feature increasing the amount of moderators in the game by adding regional moderators.

The regional moderators appeared to be randomly selected, some being UN members, and some not. Some were long-time residents of a region, and some were relatively new nations to a region. And the number of moderators varied from region to region, some having 30 moderators or more.

“There's merit in this joke, no doubt about it. There are also problems, and we've considered some doozies. We're not necessarily closing the door on this concept, but don't hold your breath waiting for your invitation to RegMod. No matter what happens, it's not likely to happen fast.” Says Frisbeeteria, a member of the Nationstates Moderating Team.

When I telegrammed Presbeeteria to get permission to use a portion of what he posted in the NS forums yesterday, he reminded me that the moderators do not have the final authority on anything, and that if the administration decide to add the features listed above to a new update--if there is one--they will do so.

Harry Potter Moved To The Challenged List
by Annabel Casimir

The famous Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, has begun to be seen to many as "unfit, disrespectful, and bad for our children" according to

angry mothers.

For those unaware of the "challenged" list, this merely means that a book has been unfit by many, and is in danger of being canceled from public places,
especially in the grasp of children, including libraries and schools.

A reason this book, which has encouraged many youths to explore the world of books, has been moved to the challenged list involves the fact that it mocks

the witchcraft religion. "There are witches and wizards out there, and we will not tolerate this mockery of our superiors" says Annabel Kuterozcu.

Maybe even more important than mockery of a religion is, what many parents agree, the fact that Harry Potter disrespects his elders, breaks rules and, even worse, is praised for breaking them. "Children should learn that rules are a good thing, not something to be broken and praised for doing so. This mockery

of a book teaches children to disobey their elders and act on themselves"snapped Eleanor Mozetuye "They are children; they don't know right from wrong

yet."

The board of education, however, plans on keeping the famous series in school. "However bad the book may be, it has completed one of our apex; to encourage

our youths to explore the wonderful world of literature." President Edgar Cafel stated. "There are bound to be critics in everything, no matter how good something
may be.” Secretary Tatara John said. "Apparently, this book's good greatly outweighs the bad.”

Angels World Goes Green
by Julie Mills

Angelstown,, Angels World—When well over one-third of Angels World’s power was lost due to a major plant failure last Thursday, questions were quickly raised about the reliability of the traditional sources of energy used in most countries—gas or hydrogen.

“I think it’s time we really started looking for alternative ways to get the energy we need.” Says noted EPA spokesperson Jon Sternam. “And I’m not just talking about Angels World, I’m talking about the world in general. We need to create a safer environment for the generations of tomorrow, and the fastest way to start is to use alternative sources of energy.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Angels World, along with several high-powered environmentalist groups from across the nation and the region of Truangel Christian Fellowship, took their cause to the parliament of Angels World with the hope of convincing Parliament to pass legislation making alternative sources of energy the standard method of producing power for Angels World’s population of six hundred million plus citizens.

“When we went to parliament with this, we figured that if we could get them to agree to pass a law banning the use of any type of fuel that’s not considered an alternative source of energy for the country’s many power plants, we could convince other nations in the region to do the same.” Jon Sternam said. “Then it might set a trend that the rest of the world might follow.”

Apparently, parliament agreed, because the legislation passed with an overwhelming amount of the house voting for the law, which will require all power plants, major retailers, and all factories in the country to convert to either wind mills, solar power, or a combination of both.

When asked how the country will be able to afford the conversion, The spokeswoman for Parliament says that the government will help finance the change.

“It will mean less dependence on foreign oil, and a cleaner environment for our citizens.” Says Lea Grafton, spokeswoman for Parliament. “I don’t think we could’ve made a better decision concerning this issue, and we want to do more to lessen our dependence on foreign oil in the near future. We are currently in the process of setting up a timeline for converting all vehicles to hybrid, with an emphasis on the use of solar power.”

20 Dead as Armed Gunmen Storm Grand Imperial Palace Grounds
by Tore Landon

(08/03/07), SUPER CITY, MARAQUE – 20 people are dead and several more injured as as many as 45 armed gunmen stormed the Grand Imperial Palace Grounds in
Super City today.

It all unfolded at around 6:39 AM just after sunrise when a group of 45 masked, armed gunmen jumped the gates at the prestigious palace and began their
assault in a failed attempt to infiltrate the palace and reportedly kill the Lord Governor, Jovan S. Norris. The men were quickly subdued after a nearly
three hour long gun battle that left the Grand Imperial Palace in lockdown and every location within a five mile radius closed for the entirety of the
incident.

The Freedom Warriors has claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming more are to come if the Lord Governor does not restore democracy back to the country
within the next five years; a demand the Lord Governor has vowed repeatedly not to bow down to. The Freedom Warriors are responsible for a slew of terrorist
attacks across the nation including their most recent attack at the famous Tri Towers in which they let loose a biological agent in the ventilation system
of the tallest and most important financial centre in the country that left more than 300,000 seriously ill and 71 dead.

The Freedom Warriors became active after a national referendum to eliminate the position of President was passed late last year. The referendum passed
with such a high majority that many in the international community saw it as a rigged vote, and soon afterwards the Freedom Warriors introduced themselves
to the world and began their assault upon the nation that has never truly been a real democracy.

The Freedom Warriors are believed to be receiving their massive funds to orchestrate these large scale attacks from an outside source linked to former
President Darius Schulz who is in prison on 13 consecutive life sentences for his admitted role in the organization and execution of some of the attacks
by the Freedom Warriors. His first interview can be seen on the World News Italia network on television or at the WNI website.

Unfortunately, this issue did not contain all the features planned for the newspaper, and we hope the paper will evolve as time goes on. But to have a successful Nationstates newspaper, we need writers—people to write news articles, creative features, etc. So if you would like to see this paper be a successful one, please contribute if you have the time and help us add a new feature of our own to the world of Nationstates.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this newspaper, either through their ideas and suggestions, through subscribing, or through contributing articles.

And a special thank you to Maraque and Basara for their writing contributions. I appoligize if I accidently forgot anyone.

Gameplay is a slow forum. One bump per 24 hours may be excessive.

I quite liked it, just check the spelling and fluency of your writing though. Finally slipping in a few pictures makes articles more interesting in my opinion.

Thank you. I didn't write the whole newspaper, only two articles, and I can't change what other people write. I can only edit. But I can change my own work if it needs it.

I don't think I can add pictures. I don't know where I'd get them, and inserting them into the right spot would be a problem. But it was a nice idea. Maybe I'll post something about that in the newspaper thread if someone else already hasn't.

Capitalist Alliance is planning to write a comprehensive NationStates newspaper...we'd love to exchange ideas/articles. You don't have to be a capitalist to work on this project; The Multiverse forums will be situated there for convenience. The forums are at:

http://capitalistalliance.spreebb.com/

I will be posting more on The Multiverse later today/tommorrow, I need to finalise policy/info.
