NS newspaper (open to everyone)

The newspaper will have multiple sections, and any nation or region who would like to contribute would be allowed to do so as long as what they submit is truthful and appropriate. The newspaper will most likely be published weekly or biweekly, and all nations and/or regions would be able to subscribe to recieve a copy via telegram by sending a telegram to me or anyone else who wants the responsebility. If I am given the responsibility, I will be glad to sort the news and to put the paper together, as well as keep track of who's subscribed.

Regional ads might also be allowed, but a limit would have to be put on the length of lines each ad could contain, and the amount of ads that went into each paper.

The idea for starting a newspaper came from another nation, but after waiting for well over a month for progress, TCF and other regions have given up hope of a NS newspaper. But I would like to go ahead with the idea because I think it would be a great edition to NS, and would be beneficial to regions and nations everywhere.

Nothing is set in concrete. Ideas and suggestions are more than welcome.

Its a great idea, and attempts have been made to do the same thing before, but almost all preceeding attempts have failed or are only very rarely updated. The problem always proves to be that it is simply to great a task. However, best of luck in your efforts, it would be great to get one off the ground.

Thank you. Hopefully it won't fail this time.

By the way: Anyone can help if they want to. Just tell me what you would like to do, and it can be anything. This is a community project, and everyone should be able to do something if they want to.

Interested in this stuff, but I have a few questions.

Will this thread be the newspaper or will we have an offsite website? (the phrase is redundant, but oh well)
And is the paper more about RL NS stuff, or will it be a fictional paper about our countries in NS?

Thanks.

I'm guessing something IC. My suggestion would be a common news feed, like the Associated Press (http://en.wikipedia.org/Associated Press) or Reuters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuters). As soon as a news story is written, it's posted on the NSNews website or whatever, and then the subscribing papers and news organizations would publish the material locally.

For example, the Kennerwyck Times and Post (http://ktap.blogspot.com) writes an article about a major event of interregional importance. It is then posted on the NS Press website. Then any other subscribing news company goes to the NS Press site, copies the article, and publishes it in their local paper.

The newspaper won't be published in this thread, and as for a separate web site for the paper, I don't know. That's up to everyone who wants to participate. If you guys want to have a site for the paper, we can do that. But I won't be able to run the site because I don't have the time.

And to answer your next question: The paper will be about real NS stuff. But it might be nice to include articles on what is happening with the various nations based on the rolleplays here in the forums. It might make the paper more interesting and enjoyable for some.

That's strictly up to everyone else, though. If you want to include things like that, you're welcome to. But if you think that wouldn't be a good idea, that's okay too.

Something like that would take a lot of time and manpower, and I don't think we have the resources. It would take someone to create and maintain the site. It would also take someone else to monitor what is posted, to edit (spelling mistakes and punctuation only), people who know how to upload files, and the site would have to be one with enough storage to hold all the articles. It's just to extensive, and would demand to much time, and would be to much to handle.

I would love to take the responsibility of putting the paper together, everyone who publishes to it can telegram me their article or whatever they want to submit, and I can organize things into their appropriate sections on my computer, put the paper together,, then send it out to whoever is on the subscription list. The system would be a lot easier for everyone involved, and would require a lot less work. And as for keeping an archive, we could create a site exclusively for that if need be. Tge site could also include a chat feature in the form of message boards where people could discuss things related to the paper.

I'd consider putting up a blog, where each approved submission is posted as a separate blog entry, much like the individual newsbite pages on Reuters and most online newspapers. This is another way nations can link to their latest news from the forums etc.

I'd be more than happy to set the blog up, if others want me to. Just say the word. I'll take care of design and everything (and if my design stinks, just tell me what you'd like and I'll change it). The blog would also contain details on how to subscribe to the mailing list as run by Angels World, and all approved articles would be posted as soon as they are forwarded to me.

I'd also love to be considered to be an editor for the paper proper, reviewing submitted articles etc.

That sounds wonderful! I do have a few questions about the subscriptions though. Would I still send out editions of the paper, or do we scrap that idea? Also, what role will subscriptions play in all of this if we go forward with the blog? In other words, what will they be used for?

Subscriptions would be used to let people know when the blog is updated and with what stories. Subscribers would be sent the complete 'edition' full of the latest stories.

Since he brought this up, I'll go ahead and let everyone know that I am excepting articles and anything anyone would like to submit, for the paper. I already have two articles ready for publication. I am also excepting quotes, creative writing, and ads. The quotes will be published one per issue, and the creative writing segment of the newspaper was just a sudden thought. It may or may not work out. It depends on whether everyone wants to include a special feature each issue.

Anyone may submit matterial by telegramming it to me. Before you send them, I ask that you thoroughly proof your work, which will help speed up the process of adding it to the paper. Also, whatever is submited can not obtain explicit matterial or foul language, and it must be appropriate for all readers.

When you send something to me, I will edit it for spelling or punctuation mistakes, and if it has anything that doesn't make sense, like a word that is totally out of place, I will send the work back to you with parenthesis around what needs looking at. I will also send a copy of the draft you sent to me via telegram.

This is the system i developed when I recieved an article out of the blue, and it seemed to work. But whether this will be the standard approach when I am the one editing, I don't know. You guys will be the first to know if anything changes.

I wouldn't mind helping with this in like a business consultant-type role.

For instance, you should link the ads idea to subscriptions, so that whichever region or group has the most subscriptions gets preference for ad space and frequency. That way, advertisers are 'buying' ad space, and you're 'selling' ad space in return for an increasing readership.

I also think the news wire idea (especially with Byze's blog suggestion) will actually prove easier than being responsible for all the content yourself.

Contact me if you'd like that kind of help.

Thanks. I don't know how many I'll be able to write, but I'll probably get a few here and there.

I'm taking an English class at college, and I think this'll be good help and practice to make me a better writer, which I'm already moderately good at.

As for the names, I think it should be up to the writer. If they want to put their nation or another name should be up to them, IMO.

If they want to, but as for me, I'll create a character who'll write the articles from my country. BTW, what articles do you think we need now? News? Fiction?

(Nearing vacation now, need to hurdle just five more exams. Then I can work. ;) )

Good luck with your exams! I've got a few coming up myself, so I know how you feel. What are you studying?

I think there probably only be one featured fictional piece per issue, so nations don't get confused. News will consist of NS stuff, and can even include news about some of the rolleplays that are going on. For example: If Westeria was at war with Miraq, and someone reported it. Or that another nation had just been hit with a major hurricane. Just like any other newspaper.

Hope that made sense, since I'm half asleep.

I guess to answer your question, we need news. The only problem is, how are we going to keep it current unless we release an issue soon. And to do that, don't we need a name for the paper?

*rubs eyes* Just the thoughts of a sleepy typer. Write whatever you want to. It's your decision. Probably the best writers are those who aren't told what to write. They find what interests them, or they come up with an idea, and run with it.

Melasia:
I think we're going to do something similar to that. I think each article will be posted as it is published. That's if someone is still willing to maintain the site and handle all of that. If not, I will be glad to organize the paper, and send out an issue to each subscribing nation as the paper is released.
Angels World

I've been doing some thinking. I have a few articles I'm holding on to for the paper, and with a few additions, and a creative piece, we could release an issue soon.

I was hoping to get one out within the next couple of weeks if possible, even if we don't have the feed up yet.

There should only be no more than five (5) regional ads per issue, and each regional ad should be limited to no more than eight to ten lines (counting blank lines within the add). We don't want to flood the paper with ads. Also, anyone who submits an article or ad, could be automatically subscribed to the issue of the paper he/she wrote for, unless otherwise specified by the sender.

Any thoughts?

---

If anyone knows of nations or regions that aren't a part of the forums, who might be interested, feel free to spread the word. The more nations that know and have access to the paper, the better.

That's strictly up to you. I don't want to impose any restrictions on the length of articles because I want everyone to feel free to be creative without any limits on how long their work can be.

Most articles haven't been very llong, and have been average length. So just use your own judgement, and more than likely you're article length will be fine.
