I hope a thread like this has not been formed already but here it goes....

I think the reason NationSates is dying is because Max doesn't advertise the site enough. I belive ads exist on "Jolt" but I have never seen them on any other sites, on CyberNations or anywhere. Perhaps Max should start with some major advertising scheme to get this place back in the air:)

I'm pretty sure Cybernations wouldn't be especially willing to have advertisements for NationStates. Much as we wouldn't care for their ads on our site.

Furthermore, I can't say that I agree with the idea that NationStates is "dying". To say nothing of the fact that if NationStates died every time someone posted concerns about us dying, we'd have ceased to exist two or three months after the game went live.

I don't know, I'm not saying your wrong. I have not been here long enough. But 90,000 nations is low and I belived the nation count dropped over the summer. I just think advertsing would be a good way to secure the future of NS.

For crying out loud, this game was created to advertise a book. Nobody, not even Max Barry himself figured it would last as long as it has.

So your saying you don't care if it dies? Or Max doesn't?

No, he's saying that it's done spectacularly well for something that was supposed to attract about 200 players and last roughly three months.

Hey, I know a smaller site that has about 10 members. Well, I seem to forget a lot of them at times, so maybe 15. People come and go all the time, and it has 0 advertising.

Frankly, I would have to say that this site can survive if people want it too, and currently that is the case.

of course we're dying without advertisement. Look, we have only 90,000 active members! Which is way fewer than, say, ....

Wait a minute.

If it is going to keep Nationstates going you would have to get more advertisers into it, like Neopets or charge people to be on the site eg. something a month even if it is as small as a dollar.

...why is it always the newest players who feel the need to tell us what's wrong with the site?

Selective bias. The older players aren't going to tell you something is wrong with the site, as the people who thought something was wrong have already moved on.

That or new players have not yet "fully experienced" nationstates.

That or new players have not yet "fully experienced" nationstates.

That's possible but I think my theory is more likely.

Say you have 100 people begin NationStates. Of those 50% "find something wrong" with the game, while 50% of those don't find anything wrong.

In my scenario, those 50% that "find something wrong" will leave NS, while the 50% who don't find anything wrong will stay. Thus, older posters, in general, find nothing wrong with the game.

In your scenario, if those 50% who "find something wrong" with the game continued playing, they would eventually come to love it. If that's the case, then generally, 100% of people who play NS would enjoy the game. I've never encountered anything in which 100% of people enjoy. Even eating and sex.

Actually, our theories aren't mutually exclusive - it's possible that the people who dislike the game for whatever reasons would like it if they continued, but they move on anyways. However, I'm willing to bet that majority of people who "find something wrong" with the game know what their tastes are, and that "partly experiencing" NS as opposed to "fully experiencing" isn't that different.

I thought it over and NationStates has almost the same amount of active players as ever. maybe people just aren't creating and forgeting as much, still though it would be nice to see more active players on

How many active players are you looking for?

I'm assuming you mean for RP, as the game itself doesn't require much interaction.

I can advertise it to tons of people I know. That could help. ;) :)

I heard of this site through another forum. I just signed up today, so I'll see how it goes.
I think it is a cool game, but I need to read how to be more pro-active with my nation.
