what do you use to make these maps? they're very good btw

I use the GIMP. I used to use MSPaint, but I switched to GIMP for the layering, which makes the maps easier to edit.

Here's the lowdown on my nation:

It's an archipeligo, about 12 million square miles or 2x the size of Russia. All the islands surround one main homeland isle, Laquasa. The mainland is about 9 million square miles. To the Northwest there's a very large island called Conquista. Not many cities there, just tons of natural rescources. West of the homeland there's Imperiala, a smaller island. To the south, there's the Kargarian Islands, a series of medium islands. East, there's the Britannican Isles. The capital, Lorai, is and the north west part of the homeland. You can go ahead and add some other cities in, I don't mind, just add one major one: Nova Madrida on the Kangarian Islands. There's thousands of smaller islands in between each major chain, so go ahead and draw them in. Thanks SOOO much!

Okay, I think I see what you want, but I have one question:

How big do you want this map? Do you want the map to be square, or do you want it to be in a rectangle? Basically, give me the dimensions you want for the map.

1600 x 1200 to 1600x 1600 should be good. The main island is very long, not too wide though. Thx!!!

It's great! Just make the main island kind of like this: J (A bit of a J shape) add some cities, label the islands (I'm an hispanic nation) and add lots of smaller islands, it'll be perfect.

I found a cool brush that works nicely for this, so I got it done much faster than I'd originally thought. Here's what I have:
