How do I motivate the nations in my region to play an active role in building a strong region? It seems that I'm having to do everything on my own.

It looks like your region only has 10 nations, so my suggestion is to get more. The more nations you have, the more likely there will be some who are interested in building up the region.

Or you could always move to a region that's not full of lazy people. :p

When I played this game for the first time around 8-6months ago i had this problem. Joined a cool region full of my friends, then made one with my cousin. Added about 12 people. Good. Not too big, not to small. Suddenly after a month of sunshine and daisy's people didn't care. And it fell to pieces.
I never mastered the knack of getting everyone involved.

The region now has 13 nations including mine, and I gain at least one nation a day. Maybe another nation will come along that wants to be really involved in growing the region.
Thank you everyone for your feedback.
If I could organize soccer championship in a region, that could boost moral.
It is not that difficult.
If you have less than 20 states, they can send you by email the teams, and their strategy (detailed strategy or just 2,3,5 for the setup of the team).
You set up who plays when, and randomly award goals giving bonuses by the strategies.
you can level up players in a team after each game, adding extra bonuses at the following games, etc... so there will be star players by the end of the championship.
If you know a scripting language it is not that difficult to script all this.
Or if you do not know soccer you can just make up a sport.
I am sure there are lots of examples around if you look at what other regions do.
