Made up, of course. Always more entertaining, especially when you make it the official food, too.

Don't usually say stuff here, but here we go.

I believe that Real Animals are better since we live on this world, but if you are talking about another Earth, or another planet. Then, yes I believe made up animals are better. Either way I have voted for Real Animals as I believe Nation States is in the current World/Earth.

Depends on the nation. If it's on an alien world, existing animals would be stupid to use. If it's "The cat lovers of cat-topia" then it's obvious your animal should be the cat. In my case, I hate dogs, so when I got the issue to have my citizens eat the national animal, I naturally made it the dog.

I think national subspecies of real animals are best.

I think national subspecies of real animals are best.

I like them as well. There is a greater chance of a kinship if you have some type of eagle and find another eagle nation, than if your nation has a national animal such as "goths", "porn stars", "snuffleguffluses", etc.

Connects can ultimately be made for any number of reasons, so I'm not saying that having your national animal be "Gary Coleman" is a completely bad thing (it really isn't too terribly clever either), but the non-native English speakers tend to have a better chance at recognizing variants / subspecies of main stream critters.

For example, when a German speaker talks about their Eulen I know they are owl lovers. If they want to put something a bit different in the field, there is less chance I'll know what they are doing.
