Not sure exactly what you mean...

You have control over your country whether you are in the UN or not. However, you can't vote for UN resolutions unless you are in the UN (though there is no reason to because they only affect those in the UN).

Furthremore, this is probably not the right forum to ask in.

It's perfectly fine to play Nationstates without joining the UN. I have half a dozen non-UN nations.

You can choose to simply answer the issues, or you can roleplay your nations' actions in the Nationstates and International Incidents forums, though I strongly suggest that you read the stickies there to get a sense of what is and is not allowed, and what good roleplay entails.

What UN membership gives you is the ability to vote for or against UN resolutions, the ability to become your region's delegate, and the ability to vote for a particular person to be your regional delegate. It also applies every UN decision to your nation, like it or not.

It depends on your definition of "control". A non-UN nation can still be influential in regional politics, and though I can't directly vote on UN resolutions with this nation, I'm in a region where the delegate votes the way the majority of its nations do so I have some influence on the delegate's vote. However, only my UN nation can directly vote for the resolutions, vote for the delegate, or become the delegate.

HotRodia has plenty of control without being in the UN, and so do many other NS nations. There are avenues of power other than UN membership. You just have to find them. :)

But it does have an effect on regional influence rankings, no?

Aye, but that only matters if someone is trying to eject you or some such, unless the internal politics of the region takes it into account.

Ah, okay, I was led to believe otherwise, though I can't recall why. I'm not into the whole invader/defender aspect of the game, so influence doesn't really matter to me anyway. *shrug*

IIRC, the more endorsements you have, the faster your influence grows. A UN nation with no endos won't gain any faster than a non-UN nation. However, the UN delegate will gain influence faster than anyone else in the region.
