Quest for the Elusive Ranking…

Few of you have even heard of it, but it does exist. There are no more than one hundred left in the entire world, but those who have seen them have not forgotten their majesty. Yes, I speak of the phantom United Nations ranking known as Tyranny by Majority. According to an online study [1 (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/UN_Category)], the ranking is defined as, “pure democracy without minority rights” and as a place where, “citizens enjoy great social freedoms and frequent elections, where the majority of the populace regularly votes to increase its benefits at the expense of various hapless minorities.” This is my goal, my Holy Grail. This is my quest for Tyranny by Majority.

Now that that’s all out of the way, I’ll give you some details. This thread is for people to post hints, suggestions, or other ideas on how to reach my dream (it’s my dream as of… oh, an hour ago). I’ll also post an update on my progress, complete with a relevant screen shot. I can’t say I will be able to update daily, what with my school schedule and short attention span (curse you, TV!), but I will try.

The plan I devised, according to the above link, is to create a democratic paradise, but repress every minority and the economy with extreme prejudice. So, does this sound like it will work?

This image (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/Tindalos/nspoliticalmap.jpg) should point you in the right direction; which appears to be high political freedom and low economic and civil freedoms. Most of my puppets no longer answer issues, so I can't offer much more help. I believe there's a way to start with a TbM, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

It’s me, Kargucagstan. This new nation is the one I will use to reach my goal. I named it Huron after a county in Michigan (the state seems wholesome) and added “Greater” because the name had already been taken. The flag is Finland’s, the currency is the dollar, the animal is the Blue Jay, and the motto is a nice Latin one meaning “Blessed of Liberty” or “Blessed of Freedom.” Of course, only the masses will be thus blessed, but that’s not my problem.

For those (very few) of you interested in my process, I chose the following answers for my starting questionnaire:

1) A country should be judged by how it treats its worst-off citizens.
Strongly Disagree

2) Corporations do more good for society than harm.
Strongly Disagree

3) Marijuana should be legal.
(Unsure on this one, as it could either be personal or political freedom, but I ruled it as personal, so) Strongly Disagree

4) The world needs to rediscover its spirituality.
(Again unsure. Chose) Strongly Agree

5) A lot of what's wrong with youth today could be fixed by a year's military service.
Strongly Agree

6) Capitalism is on the way out.
Strongly Agree

7) Without democracy, a country has nothing.
Strongly Agree

8) It's more important to deter criminals than try to rehabilitate them.
Strongly Disagree

Those choices got me the starting position of Democratic Socialists, which according to Hack’s image (thanks!) is pretty close to my goal already. Must be more politically free and less everything else. Here (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/Zipline/GreaterHuronshot1.jpg)’s a screen of my homepage.

My very first issue is, "Should Democracy be Compulsory?" I chose the first option (no, more or less).

So far today I have changed the official nation name from “The Republic of Greater Huron” to “The Democratic Republic of Greater Huron.” Makes a world of difference, no? I also changed the currency from the dollar to the florin. This seems to be the unit of currency for Hungary, but I chose it because it sounds pleasant and is the monetary unit found in the Medieval Total War series of video games. In addition to a friendly, Monty Python-themed telegram from a recruiter, I got the following issues:

Cancer Sufferer Demands Euthanasia Bill
I deemed it a personal freedom, and so went with the third option, which is to ban euthanasia.

Cloning Research Promises New Breakthrough
Unsure on this one, but I voted to shut down the cloning lab and make the research illegal.

I am currently still a democratic socialist state. Today's screen (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/Zipline/GreaterHuronshot2.jpg).

Since yesterday I have realized that I probably chose wrong on option #9 of the nation questionnaire. Prisoners are a minority, and thus need to be repressed. Maybe that's where I went wrong...

Hmm. Interesting. Of course, this will get much easier after the first week or so, when you can break out of only getting the first 30 issues. The resources in Got Issues? may be helpful too.

They are all relatively easy to attain, though I have never tried to get a Tyranny by Majority. I do have a Right Wing Utopia, which is pretty hard to get.

The trick for TbM is to restrict your economy and civil rights, which is easy enough to do. Then you must liberalize your political freedoms and get that category to at least Superb and then you should be a TbM.

Let the people vote as much as you can without discrimination. Don't give them any civil rights and completely restrict the economy by banning industries and promoting the environment. No skateboarding, no alcohol, no gambling, etc.

Good luck.

Wow, that was easy. I logged on a few minutes ago and saw that I had achieved Tyranny by Majority. Only took me three days… Hm, kind of disappointing that it was not harder. I guess the only thing left to do now is try to maintain the ranking.

Most of my nations are either Corporate Police States or Father Knows Best states. I figured it would be harder to achieve a relatively moderate democracy than either of those two, but I guess I was wrong.

Heh. Perhaps you should try for Free Market Paradise. I believe that's the "rarest" category.

According to NS Wiki, TbM is the rarest, followed by Conservative Democracy, Benevolent Dictatorship, and Iron Fist Socialists.

I might try for one of those. I'd like to see if I can hold TbM for a while first.

Several of my nations started as Right Wing Utopias, although they've mostly changed (to 'Capitalist Paradise') since then, but I've never had -- or wanted -- a TbM...
