Smoke some of what he's smoking, and the reasons will be obvious. ;)

I think that where people pick real animals, they mostly just use their favorite. However where somone makes something up the intent may be much more interesting.
For example, my national animal it the Bribe. A colourful rodent that likes shiny objects and even when wild will do tricks for treats. This is kinda relevant to the corrupt country that is Brungrid. :D

Mine is a type of sub-sapient humanoid called the 'goldilocks'...

but then, of course, my nation's "people" aren't 'Human' either... ;)
Land of the Trolls

What's a "human"? :D My land is ruled by trolls, as the name implies. The ogres that romp in our forests aren't intelligent and qualify as our national animal.

Uhhh...the trugla?

But what is a trugla?
Brllnt

My national animal is "the one over there". You see, when Brllnt was first visited by "outsiders" in the days of ol' (about yesterday), the "outsiders" immediately started asking the important questions to the natives. Among the first questions asked were "Got any drugs?", "Wanna go to war or something?", "Where's the bathroom", and, of course, "What is your national animal?". The answers given were "Yes", "Yes", "Yes", and "the one over there". Strangly enough, the final answer was givin with a sweeping gesture towards an empty field.

But what is a trugla?

As I said before, quess. Soon, it shall be a feather-bellied trugla though.

They are like Zomanias, as they don't really have a description. Ha Ha Ha.

So, my animal is a WORD!

I think that each one has your opinion... some guys think using real animals is cool because gives reality to the game but some think that fantasy is better to give the game a fantasy aspect... my country have the horse as national animal... but its individual... each one with your opinion.

Well, realistically, the national animal can be whatever. No nation in real life has to conform to the "National (noun)" list that a lot of nations conform to. Has America picked it's national tree yet? What is France's national mineral? The answers to such questions can be found in wikipedia, but in the end it simply doesn't affect anyone.

America picked a symbolic bird because it meant something. Other nations will pick one thing as their big symbol that means something to them and they want everyone to know it. But not everyone has to pick a national everything like they do in real life, because it just begins to get meaningless after you've gotten around to number 15, the national seasoning.

Nation States is great as it doesn't bog you down with the massive list of national everythings you have to pick. It lets you choose your symbolic animal, and it doesn;t really have to be an animal, and than we get on with it.

Some people pick trees, elements, machines, et cetera. One nation even has the lesbian as it's national animal.

So people pick whatever, and they do it for whatever reason, and it doesn't have to have any connection to the real life thing of picking that whole list of national crap.

lesbian, civilian, enslaved person; You can get tons of things here that refer to people.

Flameville has civilian, and how it's used is awesome.

It's up to the individual.

Grunts all the waaaay! They symbolize curiosity, mass numbers, and cannonfodder. And they're cute to boot. As the old saying goes:

"Everyone needs a lil Grunt in dare life!

My National Animal is the Shrike, a species of feirce bird like creatures roughly the size of a Roc, but far more vicious. Their bodies are mainly sinew and bone, with a deadly beak and claws. A few Shrikes could easily wipe out several dragons(Depending on what sort of dragons, and whether they know much magic)
