I only started playing NS yesterday and I have many questions that aren't appropriate for this forum but the main one involves regions.

Having joined I dealt with my first issue and then checked my telegrams, I had one from NS admin and another two, one minute later, from regions asking me to join up.

It seems that either new players are being hunted out extremely efficiently by these regions or that some automated process is hunting for them.

I'm also not sure why I would want to join a region anyway.

The fact that you were founded will show up in whatever region you were initially put into, one of the Pacifics. You don't have to move, but many people find smaller regions with people they know and like and enjoy that. It's up to you how much you interact with other people and if you want a big or a small region.
