My nation has been UN delegate for the region known as Forest for a little over 2 months. Things were going smoothly until, twice in the last week, crashers have tried to invade. I understand that this is legal, however it is stressful when all you want is a peaceful region – but that’s my problem.
As a result of the attempted invasions I have trawled through the forum and Nswiki to get a better understanding of the issues and what can be done to maintain Forest as it is, however there are a number of points that aren’t made clear so perhaps people can provide advice.
It seems to me that the goal of invaders is to gain control of a region (obviously) and, in particular, to enable the leader of the invaders to re-found the region. Presumably, there is some kudos in having your nation as the founder of multiple regions. There must be more to it, though, as one could achieve the same result by founding new regions and installing puppets. This is straying into questions on human nature, which are unfathomable so let me stick, then, to the mechanics of invading and re-founding.
Forest is without a founder thus making it vulnerable to invasion. All a crasher needs to do is gain more endorsements than the incumbent UN delegate to take over regional control.
*Question: How soon can UN member nations, newly arrived in a region, endorse other nations?
This may seem a stupid question at first but it’s not obvious - I joined the UN last November, have been in Forest for ages, and endorsed a nation for the first time in May. When a UN member arrives there is no information on whom it endorses or who endorses it. My guess is that nations can endorse immediately but the endorsement is not effective until after the next UN update. This would mean that a defending delegate has a window of opportunity between the arrival of the invaders and the next UN update to expel and ban them. Very tight! (If this is correct, an early UN update last Friday caught both me and the invaders unawares – I missed the window and they didn’t get enough invaders in.)
Should the invaders succeed then the next step is to re-found the region, which, I gather, means removing all nations from the region first. Unless the invaders had been sleeping in the region for a long time prior to the takeover then they would not have sufficient influence to expel and ban long-time residents. This would mean that the “natives” have time to regroup and regain the delegate position.
*Questions: Does a region cease to exist the moment the last nation leaves? Can it be re-founded immediately? Alternatively, can it only be re-founded after the next UN update? Is there some other way to re-found a region?
It seems to me that one way to regain control of an invaded region is to wait until the invaders start the expelling process then re-found the region the moment the last nation leaves (or the moment the next UN update occurs, whichever is the trigger). This would require vigilance and timing.
The basic strategies for successfully defending a region would be to do one or more of the following.
1) Found your own region or reside in one with its original founder. The most effective strategy but a player may be attached to the region they are in.
2) Re-found your region, with or without the agreement of its other members. This may involve griefing, which, I think, is still illegal.
3) Make sure your delegate has sufficient endorsements to resist attack.
4) Join an alliance that will send sympathetic UN members to help out.
5) Vigilance – monitor the activities of known crashers and expel and ban, expel and ban, expel and ban….
What a pain in the arse.
