you can do as little or as much as you want :)
I would suggest starting in International incidents and post up a factbook with details off your nation.
then you can meddle as much as you want to in the forum.
the UN is also an option as well although its a two edged sword. some UN laws may well clash with your own. there is also a UN forum and most people anounce their ambassadors in the Strangers bar.

Or... if you're not so roleplay inclined, you can answer your daily issues and guide your nation towards the top of the UN rankings. Or get involved in your regional politics and forum. Defending and invading are two other opportunities.
Basically... explore, read a lot of different areas, and settle on something that interests you. :)
