About the NS Earths and such

I'm sorry to sound like a newbie or something, but I haven't seen this stuff when I last played with this nation (which was way back in late '04 or mid '05). I am utterly confused about these...Nationstates earths popping up. I was looking at these when I played a few small nations in the past, but never really understood them. I look at some of these..."worlds" and I don't know if they are just alternate timelines of Earth or they are just a different planet/galaxy or something along those lines.
Again I apologize for sounding like a newbie and there could be some topic explaining this, but I'm trying to get back into the game with one of my old NS states and need to understand the current situation clearly so I will know what to do.

Basically what the "Earths" are is this. A person or group of people take an image of RL Earth and create a mirror planet. They then ask people to claim land on it and then call it something.
There are a few different ones, the most popular is Earth II.

So are people usually making topics in these "Earths", making random political event threads without relation to either the RL Earth or the Alternate Earths, or is most of the political issues and nations still dealing with the RL Earth.
In other words, what is being used most of the time?

I don't really RP in the mirror earths, so i'll let someone else handle this one...

From what I've seen, it's largely people who want to "own" their home nation or state, and when they run into someone who's already claimed it, they spin off another Earth. At one point there were 5 or 6 running around (plus 2 or 3 in alternate time periods). It seems to have largely settled down to Earth 2 and Earth 20 (or D20, or something).
Typically, I believe that the Earth members play their own nations with their own stats, just in real world locations. Modern, real world, politics is rarely bothered with. Kinda hard to do a role play about George Bush and Junichiro Koizumi going to Graceland when neither exist and America is chopped up into three or four different nations. I think they use real history up until a random point when they took over, however.
As you can probably tell, I don't think too much of the concept but... eh... as long as they remember that NS rules still apply to them (ahem), it's not really my concern.
