I have a few questions:
How does the population grow at NationStates?
Does it grow faster if I do more Issues, or does it grow automatically?
Does it grow linear or exponential?

It grows automatically as long as your nation isn't dead. The growth is linear over time. Issues won't change the rate of growth.

But, how do you get a population of 7 billion, like Neo-Industria, with a growth rate of 1 million/ day?
Population grows between a few million to 8 million a day.
When you're new, population grows at a million a day. After you hit 10 million, it grows from 5-8 million a day. Nations with 7 billion population have been here for 3-4 years.

The highest populations are just over 8 billion.
Basically it takes an extremely long time to reach it, around 3/4 years.

Any nation with a population signifigantly higher than Last Hope's is likely due to an old bug which caused population to grow at double the normal rate.
I've only seen one 8 billion pop nation. I'm blanking on the name, but I'm sure it started with "Pr".
