Regional Maps

I had a poster on one of my recruitment threads here for The Honor Guard, a very active RPing region state that he didnt really like regional maps all that much. Although I tend to disagree, and he didnt really offer much more, I am greatly interested in why. I dont want to clutter up that thread so I bring it here for others to bring their opinions to as well. (also I hope he will come here and state his view)

This is the recruitment thread: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=10496181#post10496181

1) What is wrong with a regional map?
2) What are the things you all love about them?
3) What are the things your cant stand about them?

Thanks.

I'd have to COMPLETELY, edit, redesign, and change

My military
Landscape
People
Technology
Archeticure
and every RP I am in, was in, or ever will be

If it is impossible for me to be in a costal nation.

Its not so much as the fact you restricted it to one continental mass at a time. While they do make RPing easier, it'd be better if I could select a different spot then the LANDLOCKED ones I am offered

Also, if you have AIM or MSN I'd like to have it please.

My suggestion would be to just have a map of water that is broken up into different portions, and have everyone make up a map of their own nations. This way, you have a regional map, and everyone gets to decide if they are an island, inland nation, coastal nation, etc...

Actually this is quite not true. Many of the nations we have in our region changed nothing in their nation except their military and border line. Their technology, people, culture, religions and even landscapes remain extremely similar to anything that they used their nation in before.

If it is impossible for me to be in a costal nation.

Well if thats your only disagreement, then you'd better join the region fast as a nation that held a coastal territory recently we ejected for inactivity. (see map for details, limited time offer)

Actually, the entire point of our region is in order to streamline and make RPing easier and better. So your statement is more of a cry of 'I cant get what I want' really, other than a solid argument for opening up the other continents to be claimed.

If you were to submit a proper argument that would be convincing, I think that I would be motivated to putting it to a vote (because we are a democratic region) on the forum to open up a SECOND continent (the one above Rigin).

I understand how we RPers put alot of hard work and sweat into our nations, and that is why we at The Honor Guard seek to make RPing about our nations not about logistics and numbers. You will notice that the Military Calculator is very simplistic so that our players dont worry so much about dollar signs as they do about writing an invigorating story.

Although this is a great idea in theory, there are many problems that arise from it:

1) How to you set a scale or make sure that all people's submitted countries are of relative sizes on the map? How do you make certain that they all format well together without extensive (very extensive) Photoshoping?

2) What occurs when a nation leaves? Does its spot on the map vanish? What happens to those maps that depend on them? How would cartographers keep up?

3) What happens when two or more nation's who are close to one another do not agree on landscaping? We return to the same problem that The Marxist State stated in his post.

Truly, I really like the idea, and if people were to join a region for life and really dedicate to it, it would work phenomenally well, however there are a lot of snags that would require triple (modest estimate) the work involved in every entering and exiting nation.
