I protect it every issue I get. Once, just once, I chose the option to allow people to hunt it, but since then, I've protected it. And they just won't come back. Has anyone managed to get their national animal 'back' from main course status? Is it possible?

Wait for the issue to come again, however this may take a long time...

I think it takes until you get that issue again but it might just be one where it takes a while to go away.
