How do you determine your country's military might, like number of weapons/weapon types and your GDP?
or is it all made up, being within reason.

Mostly made up within reason. But to get reason, I use this: http://www.sunsetrpg.com/nsxmlparser.php
And for weapons go into International Incidents and buy some from a "storefront" thread, keeping in mind your nation's defense budget.
