How does one gain a larger population for a nation? I understand that once a nation reaches 500 million then the founder can write what the hell they like for their nation's factbook.....

Population goes up with more time. For younger nations I thiink it's about 1-3 million a day, later on moves to 5-7 million a day.
At 500 million, you are allowed to choose your own nation type (eg the Triumvirate of Enn, the Holy Otaku Church of The Eternal Kawaii etc), instead of just being given the basic list.

Also, you can submit issues. I have done so, and I am waiting for a TG on whether or not my issue will be accepted.
