What makes a nation more powerful in it's public status than other nations.

Is a strong economy more important than say an exchange rate?

Economy is definately important, but militaries are also highly respected.

Well, the reason why your exchange rate will be higher or lower is because of the strength of your economy. So if you have a "Frightening" economy, your exchange rate will be stronger against the dollar than, say, a "Basket Case".

However, probably the most respected thing is population. The only way to get a higher population is to stick around longer. That's why nations from March 2003 are held in higher esteem than a newbie from September 2005, even if that newbie is a puppet of an older nation (such as an ex-mod).

How elaborately is the economy modelled? Does anyone know?

Not too elaborately. Your economy level is based on your GDP and your tax rate. If your GDP goes up, your economy goes up (generally). If your tax rate goes up, your economy goes down (although for me, actually, I've gone from a Basket Case economy with 52% tax to a Good economy with 83% tax, but that's just me). Your economy level in turn influences your exchange rate.
