Read through the stickies at the tops of the forums, there your best bet for learning the ropes. As for making your nation better, you can have your own personal flag, create your own Military Hardware or buy some from the many storefronts in the International Incidents forum. Then just RP events in your nation, or stick your nose into someone elses affairs.

Not much of a help, but i'm sure someone ele will chime in with something.

Well, first, it's good you've expressed an interest in RP. Quite a few new players come in, look around, and then say, in the words of one, 'RP is gay'. So, if you're willing to do some RP, that's all good. The main ways in which RP is conducted is war, trade and diplomacy. I suggest, as the poster above does, that you read some of the stickies, particularly those in International Incidents. Euro's 'Guide To NationStates', linked from one II Sticky, is particularly helpful.

Beyond that, your idea of making your nation 'better and stuff' is interesting. There are 3 basic ways:

making your nation good, OOC. This means getting a good flag (make one yourself, or ask on The East Pacific forums about getting one), and maybe making a Wiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net) page for yourself;
making your stats right. This means getting your nation the way you want it. If you want a strong economy, for example, you should try to answer issues so that your economy will benefit;
making your nation a strong RP country. For this, interaction is the best way. Other players can advise you on how to set a realistic economy and build a good armed forces, so often posting a 'Factbook' about your nation in II is a good start. People may comment, and you can adapt according to it.

There is no real substitute for interaction, so my advice is to get involved. Through that, people will tell you how to RP well.

Do you want to improve your nation in the actual game as well?
