iMove to Gameplay.
The categories, from what I believe, are random, so there really is no way to tell the order.

I think they removed it because population is just the age of a nation, and that would make the rankings be the same every time.

No, the category is sorted out by population rather than the age of the nation.
the age of the nation could be different than the population because of how many issues you go through, correct?

Or if your nation dies and is restored later.

Incorrect. Issues never affect your population. Ever. Population is random in its growth though, so a nation that is a few days younger than you could quite possibly have a bigger population.

Incorrect. :D
Population growth fluctuates randomly within certain parameters, i.e. no negative population growth, no üb3rgrowth (like 20 million/day), etc.
I believe the possible range for daily population increases is either 5-8 million or 5-9 million. Growth is random within these parameters. If your nation has less than a certain population (I think it's either 50 million or 80 million, haven't done puppets in awhile), your population will grow by about 10% each day with any fraction rounded up. Your first population increase will always be from 5 million to 6 million.
After you reach that magic number, you'll get more variable population increases.
