The Nation Name I want is reserved, but not being used by a current nation.

I really wanted to use the name "Modest Mouse" for an NS. I even drafted up a constitution (rough draft) based on their discology (Yes, I'm a geek and a die-hard Modest Mouse fan).... I checked the name, and what I got was a pretty standard message stating that "A former nationstate has reserved this name". So I went to the World link, and did a search for NSs with the name Modest Mouse. There are none currently active.

My question is, basically, in a nut-shell, et cetera: WTF!?

If no-one is using this name currently, and if there are no active nations with said name, why can't I use it? It seems like it's a pointless waste of the name if it's not in use.

And this isn't just applicable to one name. I've seen this same situation occur several times, to several different people. It seems that just because a nationstate gets banned, or ceases to exist in some other way, their name is still locked in. It's futile.

Can someone shed some light on this, please?

As I recall, Nation names (when they're taken) can't be used by another nation, even after their deletion. However, I think they've started letting you use the older names since we broke the million barrier. You'd need to ask a mod, though.

Millionth Nation Created!

by Max Barry

Hot damn, we've broken the magic 1,000,000 barrier! That's a million nations in a little over two years. No wonder the world feels crowded.

Because the number of names reserved for former nations is getting kind of ridiculous (850,000 and counting), we'll soon begin releasing the names of nations that were purged for inactivity more than 18 months ago. That means you'll be able to create a fresh new nation with the same name as an old, deleted one (and the old one won't be able to be resurrected).

And no, before you ask, bribes will not get you first crack at a cool name. Don't look at me like that, I know you were thinking it.

Hopefully that helps.

IIRC it was mostly so that people couldn't get the name of e recently banned fellow and get massive abuse on the forums and stuff because people thought it was their asshole namesake, or so people couldn't abuse the fame of a well-known, recently DEAT-through-inactivity nation.

And don't dare ask for Famicon, WiNA or Talantra, or I'll tear you a new one.

Anyway, you could ask the mods but the answer will probably be negative.

Any white message within this post should be viewed with a minimal amount of humour.

Ah, well, in that case I make this a beseech to the benevolent moderators of the hallowed halls of NationStates to grant me the abilities and responsibilities accorded to a NationState created in the image and philosophy of Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, the Ugly Casanova endeavor, et. all., under the name 'Modest Mouse'. Ee Gads, that was a muddled sentence. How 'bout it, mods? Can I have the name Modest Mouse to be used as one of my NationStates? Please?

Hey, hey! Check it out. One of the Rights of my hypothetical MM NS Constitution:

"As a Citizen of the State of Modest Mouse, you have the Following Right:
You have the Right to give well-intentioned but bad advice. "

A cookie to the first person who can tell me which album and which song that 'Right' is derived from.
