well, nothing seems to be happening!
is it simply a case of visiting once a day, dealing with issues, follow rankings and stuff, deciding whether to join the UN, and gaining influence in your region that way?

mostly, yes.
Or you can join the Role Players over in the roleplay forums and play out various other things. But mostly it is a slow development of your nation through 2 daily issues.
