I was wandering how much of an effect The UN's decisions actually have on member states' politcal freedoms and economy etc, is it just a talk shop or does it have some effect?

It does have an effect, sometimes a drastic one depending on what sort of nation one runs.

Of course, we don't know exactly what the effects will be for each resolution, we only have a general idea based on category and strength.

I created a nation specifically to be my UN puppet, My Warrior Puppet. When it was created it was a "Capitalist Paradise". It held UN status for nearly a year, without answering any issues. It is now a "Left-Leaning College State".

Your stats are altered according to the proposal category. For example, Political Stability: "A resolution to restrict political freedoms in the interest of law and order," does just that.

I remember there was a UN resolution which made all UN member's economy drop several levels. And that's the only one I remember of having a real impact. The rest are subtle changes you hardly notice.
