Methods of recruiting for your region

When it comes to recruiting other nations to join your region, let’s face it… it gets more complicated than it sounds. You can’t just post, “Come join my region, it’s fun!” in a thread in Gameplay, and expect others to join it. You gotta have some good reason for them to join. There are many aspects on recruiting that can be brought to attention. One thing I’ve noticed is that having a well organized thread on your region is always a good thing. It doesn’t have to be extremely long and wordy, because if anything, that’s going to scare people away, because they don’t want to read everything. It’s a good thing to make your thread exciting and to make some sort of appeal to others as to why they should move to your region. In this thread, I’ll go over different suggestions and methods of advertising your region.

Table of Contents
A. Regional Name
B. Who is in your region?
C. Data of Each Individual Nation
D. Region’s History
E. Regional Leadership
F. Events/Happenings in your Region
G. Regional News Updates
H. UN Activity?
I. Invading/Defending
J. Off-site Forums
K. Random Facts
L. Conclusion

A. Regional Name
The name of the region can be a great description for your own region. There may even be a background to exactly why the Founder created a region and named it what they did. For example, the first region that I created was called The Kingdom of the Midlands. I got the “Midlands” part from a fantasy RP book I was reading at the time, and thought it would be a great name for a region. Despite many people thinking that a name is nothing, I will admit from past experiences, that I have been more interested in those regions with descriptive names. This may not go for all people, but personally, a region called “Ilovecandy” probably wouldn’t appeal to me as much as “The Kingdom of the Midlands” does. Of course, there is more to a book than its cover, but a cover certainly gives a helping hand. Try to go for an original name, and most likely, others will be a bit more interested.

B. Who is in your Region?
Another way to appeal to others is who is in your region. The regional advertisement for the Chaotica is a perfect example as to show everyone who is in your region. Here’s the link: Member List of Chaotica (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8104187&postcount=2)
Links to each specific nation page is a good way for others to check out exactly what each nation has chosen in their issues, by the way their description is shown, as well as the categories they have been put in. Some regions have a specific political stance, such as Conservative, Liberal, or even Socialist. Here’s an example of a region looking specifically for those with a Capitalist point of view: United National Capitalists (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=412239)

C. Data of Each Individual Nation
Another optional suggestion would be to provide factbooks to all of the nations that have made one. It’s a good way for each regional member to get to know others on a more personal level. Again, here’s an example from the region of Chaotica: Chaotica’s Factbooks (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8104187&postcount=2)

D. Regional History
As the rest of the categories suggest, specific things attract specific people. Regional History could be another way to hook someone else into your region. If your region is for RP’ers, then perhaps a history of the members of your region would be good, as well as friendly regions and rival regions. For example, as The Kingdom of the Midlands grew in size, the region of GCON slowly became our rivals. Our region was pro-UN while their region was seeking to get rid of the UN. Our regions clashed multiple times, in the RP’ing aspect of things, making things more exciting for each region.

E. Regional Leadership
Most regions have some sort of organization to it, such as a leader (President, King, etc), as well as a Cabinet to aid the leader in its actions. Describing who the leadership within your region is will give others a way of understanding the region a little more, knowing who the leader is, and who they could talk to in joining the region. For the larger regions, there usually is one person given the task of recruit for their region.

F. Events/Happenings in your Region
There are regions out there that use specific events to attract specific people. For example, in order to promote the unity of a region, some people create soccer tournaments, or other sports events, or even a “Summit” to discuss regional politics, just to make sure that everyone has a chance at staying involved in the region. There’s nothing better than knowing that your opinion is appreciated and that you have an intricate role in the success of your region. A good suggestion for new regions out there is to create fun events that will make staying in your region more fun.

G. Regional News Updates
Once a region establishes itself, and creates leadership, new positions are often handed out so that each member has something to do to promote their own region. News updates to exactly what’s going on in your region is always a fun way to pull someone’s interest into it. A good example is to update everyone on elections within your region, as well as new founded relations with other regions, or rivalries.

H. UN Activity?
A major factor in the interest in a region is ones’ stance towards the UN. There are some people out there who believe that the United Nations is extremely corrupt, and would rather not join a region that is involved in it, and then there are people who enjoy interacting with others, within the UN, in trying to make the world a better place. You can’t satisfy everyone when it comes to attracting people to your region, so don’t worry about if there are some people opposed to the UN, when your region is pro-UN.

If your region is pro-UN, the activity of the UN members is vital to your regions role within the UN. More activity means more votes for your regions’ political stance. Having many members of the UN can also get you involved in the Invading/Defending aspect of the game, but we’ll get into that later.

If your region is anti-UN, there is another way. Despite there not being an organization that is opposite the UN, you have the opportunity of creating your own little United Nations for your region, perhaps in your regional website, and creating the rules for it yourself, such as how many votes it takes to pass a resolution.

I. Invading/Defending
If your region is created specifically for the invading/defending aspect of the game, it would be a good idea to notify anyone interested in your region of it. It’s up to you as to whom you allow in your region, but if you are interested in accepting UN members into the region, that’s your decision. There are regions like that in NationStates. Stating who your region is friendly with, and who your region is rivals with is also a good way to get to know your region better.

J. Offsite Forums
A great way to meet with your fellow regional members is to create an offsite forum specifically for the organization and planning of your own region. There, you can get to know your fellow regional members, as well as strategize for any future actions by your region, depending on what part of NS you are involved in. That way, others can’t see exactly what you are planning.

K. Random Facts
Random facts about your region are always interesting as well, such as how many nations are "Compulsory Consumerist States", "Capitalizts", or any of the rest of the types of governments. Some more suggestions for random facts are the total population of the region, and how many nations have each specific economic rating, civil rights rating, and political freedoms rating.

L. Conclusion
Of course, none of these things are mandatory, but it’s a good way in getting more nations interested in joining your region. Ultimately, you can get so much more detailed in creating and advertising your region, but these are a few helpful hints for those of you who aren’t too familiar at recruiting.
