So what exactly is this game about?
I can't figure out much about what I should be doing? I'd hate to think of all those 5m people I've just created a country for being left on their own on a poor defenseless and impoverished island.
Perhaps an icon "Teach population to fish" might help

well, there's several ways to play this game:
answer and discuss issues (there's a special forum somewhere here for that, called "got issues?"). you can set your nation to how many issues you recieve each day from none to twice a day. (note, in vacationmode, you don't get issues and those you voted on but are not processed yet, won't untill you put it out of vacation mode again).
you can join the UN and discuss UN proposals and resolutions, find more on this in the United nations forum.
You can roleplay in either the forum NationStates or International Incidents.
You can play the invasion and regional politics and gamemechanics part of the game, of which you can find more in this forum.
talk about real life issues and politics in the general forum.
and maybe i'm forgetting some stuff here..

yeah..that was an issue i got when my nation was about half a year old...now i'm stuck with my people eating dogs...
In our nation butterflies are a sacred and protected species. :o
If you want a lot of change to your nation (I'm also new, so I know I do) you can go to settings and have two issues delivered a day.

my guess is this was meant to be one of those 5 minuet games that advertise something (max berry's book) but then some udernerd spent months creating rules so he can play a dungeon master type game
It's not just a 5-minute game. I spend at least two hours on NationStates each day, mostly discussing things on the forums.

I'm playing it by receiving the max amount of issues, taking a stand on (almost) all of them, and waiting to see what happens. I've chosen not to get involved in the UN (at least yet) because I just think it's interesting to see what the country would end up like if I were in charge.
The answer so far... different than I thought!
