Mine's just the standard British Blue Ensign style colonial flag with the coat of arms of Sir Richard Cobden, after whom we are named and whose political and economic theories we are based on, underneath which is our motto ("Copra Sanctum", which means Holy Poo)

At the top half is Britain's Union flag, a symbol of Britain's influence over my nation. In the centre of the Union flag is a crown, this crown represents my nation as an independent Constitutional monarchy.
The national symbol of my country is the lion, three lions are shown in the bottom half of the flag as well as indicating our links with the English Royal Family.

Tsaraine
18-04-2005, 04:45
http://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/uploads/tsaraine.jpg

That's the flag of the Greater Ascendancy. It's based on a similar one made for me by Galdago, which he came up with by himself.

The eight blue bars of the octagon thing represent the eight Tekhati (colonies) of Tsaraine; Scheighu, Katai, Maraldi, Io (The Ascendancy-administered NDA Protectorate of Burninatonian Io, to be precise), Tenebris, High Stone, Far Stone, and Kel Meralkharant. In the version by Galdago there were seven bars, but with the addition of Tenebris as a fully-fledged Tekhat rather than a development zone, an extra bar was needed.

The red bar in the background represents blood, and stands for all the nice things that colour has been associated with over time; revolution, socialism, and (in Tsarainese culture, due to Tsarainese religion), sacrifice. Dulce et decorum est, pro patria mori and all that.

It and the blue bars are outlined in gold because a) gold is pretty, and b) putting a colour on a colour is frowned upon in vexillogical circles. The gold fimbriation avoids that.

The symbol in the middle is the Early Sche'dayach glyph for "Ascendant", as the government is the Greater Ascendancy - which is a convoluted political ideological thing similar to the Soviet Union calling itself "communist" when it wasn't. It can be taken to mean "Our state is the very epitome and perfection of the modern nation-state. Nyah."

Also, the fact that it's a Sche'dayach glyph as opposed to a Tsakh word is a little nod of equality towards Tsaraine's ethnic majority/political minority.

Finally, it's grounded on black because (due to another religious thing) in Tsarainese culture black represents purity. Again, it's saying "Nyah."

And so, in the fine spirit of Tsarainese culture, I leave you with this;

Nyah!

Komokom
18-04-2005, 11:05
http://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/uploads/komokom.jpg

Since my old flag was near continuosly being mocked in IRC #nationstates, :p

I re-created the really-old flag I used to have, in MS paint tonight, pixel by pixel, until I got a loose approx. of what I can still recall.

The castle-like twin towers and main body 'o' the flag represent the partially isolationist policy and way of thinking of Komokom, geographically and national identity-wise speaking, that is. Certainly not economically. This is further hinted at in those fine white " swirls " in the castle part, which are similar you might notice to a topographic map, noting peaks and raised land ... like mountains ( ding ! we have a winner ! ) as Komokom is in fact a reasonable sized bit 'o' land, but mostly mountain ranges, valleys, and hills.

The earth is shown as a rich green to represent the fertile mountain valeys, as so is the letter K ( For Komokom, of course ) inside the structure, to signify eternal economic viability. The small scales on the top left of the K represent not justice in the traditional legal sense, really, but trade and commerce, and fair dealing. The key to the right represents both safety, security and the presence of law at large. Some of you might notice the sword hilt to the left, on the diagonal of the K, showing it is not drawn but is kept ready for when it is needed, e.g. significant of national military being almost entirely defence orientated.

The simple crown, is tipped on one side ( Majour difference from original design I did ) to show that the Monarchy no longer rules the country, how-ever, it has not been turned upside down, which is significant in that the monarchy remains but only as a shadow of its former power, having been other-thrown decades ago in peaceful but popular revolt. It remains now only as a part of living history, and minor governmental significance, all symbolic, which no actual authority other then that granted by the Parliment and the Presidency.

Bllue sky and white high-lights, purity and freedom I guess, yellows for economic power, and reds military strength / ever-present blood and toil in all things.

I was going for a medievil kind of family crest look almost, so I went in for the simple bright colours. Past detail of note, oh, is the ten tiny gold crosses situated on top of he battlements of the main body of the " castle ". Komokom's only recognised belief system was christianity, protected by both church and monarchy, but the country today is mostly atheist, as it was at time of the revolt.

Mind you, I only really put thought into it tonight, so yeah, hope that makes vague sense.

The background flag is of Scotland, my homeland.

The handsome beast in the middle is the national animal of the Armed Republic of Crusty Scrote; the big hairy sack-otter. Note how he salutes me as sovereign leader!!

The stars to the right are taken from the Australian flag, a country where, if there was any justice whatsoever in the world, I would have been born and lastly, the symbol on the left (nicked from the flag of Mozambique) is an AK47, crossed with a hoe, superimposed on an open book representing the equal interest of Crusty Scrote in industry and employment, education and state defence.

Either that, or I just wanted a gun on my flag. Well we are the Armed Republic you know...

Arcopolis

Flags should look like FLAGS. AKA, something you'd actually see someone running up a flagpole. In my opinion the American flag itself needs to unbusy itself and simplify. I feel Arcopolis' ensign manages to do this quite well:

http://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/uploads/arcopolis.jpg

The left-centered seal symbolizes our liberal attitude toward societal improvement while the golden pyramid expresses the industrious nature of our people and an economy untainted by the motives of competing business. The green behind the pyramid is a nod to our environmental initiatives, as is the deep blue field surrounding, representing the crisp, clean night skies from whence we came. The five white-on-black stars represent the founding colonies, which originally arrived from space. The lone star at left reflects the loss of one of our colonies to mysterious circumstances during interstellar transit. The framing strips of crimson acknowledge the millions who died over the generations, bringing Arcopolis to this world from the furthest reaches of our galaxy.

Common Europe, just so you know your link only takes us to our own nation pages. (Don't worry we can still click on your name to get to your nation's page, and your flag's not too bad.) If you want to edit your link, then go back to your nation page (in another tab if you can -it'll save you time hunting to find this again). Right-click on your flag and copy the image location. You can then paste that link into your message while editing.

*Note: if you already knew this, sorry. Just thought you might like some advice since you seem new.

The Confederacy of TechnocraticCityStates: http://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/uploads/technocraticcitystates.jpg

I was too lazy to clean it up after the last enlargement.

I utilized the Stars and Bars for the base design of my flag. The reason for this was two fold the first being to both show support for and pride in my CSA heritage and the second to provide a historical foundation for my nationstates' confederate flag.

I chose the Stars and Bars over later CSA flags as the battle flag tends to illicit thoughts of racism from most in our US society (even myself) and instead of fueling a debate in which no one is really listening to the other side anyway I chose to with my flag simply sidestep it while still showing my pride in my heritage. (Not from the south by the way, Washington State with relatives that fought on both sides of the Civil War.)

The stars are thirteen in count for both the historical significance as well as pure aesthetics. They could also reference the number of city states in my nation, or the number of founding city states, if I wanted to role play that.

Last but not least we have the monad, a design that can be found in many cultures. I use it in reference to Technocracy as it symbolizes the balance between production and consumption.

I replaced the blue canton of the flag with a black one to do away with the charade of freedom and liberty that blue represents.

@Arcropolis - I agree that nationstate flags should look like real world flags. Your flag is even more "busy" than the US flag.

@Five Free States - The flag you use as a base was never used as the national flag for the CSA. It was strictly a battle flag. It was used as a canton for the second and third official CSA flags.

@Spanigland - Your flag is based off of other flags too.

If it's your flag, then go to your nationstate homepage, right-click on the image of your flag and go to 'properties'. Copy the address. In your post, click on the little http://assets.jolt.co.uk/forums/jolt/editor/insertimage.gif icon, and past the address of your flag, then press the 'close all tags' icon.

A different style this time, for 9 Squadron BGRAF:

The pre-1801 Union Jack of GREAT Britain, the trademark yellow band of Claverton, and the 9 Squadron Crest.
