UN Reports Listings

Hello, I was curious if a complete listing of all the daily United Nations Reports exist somewhere? I have done a bit of searching but haven't turned up anything. I have been keeping track of some of them for the past month or so, and have counted 22 different report categories so far.

In addition, is there any information about how random these are shown? I have seen the "Healthiest Nation" come up two days in a row once, and many others show up once a month (seems normal).

Thanks, MM

Since late Fall 2004, Groot Gouda and myself have been taking turns saving the rankings for our region: International Democratic Union.

You can count the number of differenty categories used from our index. :) This reminds me I should grab today's data.

Sunset used to record this information for a good number of nations, but it became too much work. You can look at what he nabbed here (http://www.sunsetrpg.com/unrankings.html).

Thank you for the links. I can see how doing this every day becomes a lot of work, especially when you start adding in a ton of nations. I find it easiest to track all nations in the region I'm in, which has around 25 to 30 nations on average; it's easier than searching out individual nations, and thanks to Firefox's tabbed browsing, opening each nation is quick and efficient.

You can see the work I've done here (http://beauchampbucket.com/themassive/nationstates/unrank.htm).

In the two months I've been tracking them, it looks like I've seen about half the reports! Thanks again!

That is nice! :) I like how you also are listing the number of nations in the world. In fact, I'm going to use your nations of the world data for the few days I missed in Feb. / Mar.

With that in mind, I'll be away most of May 2005, and if you or somebody else is still keeping track of any sort of daily population / ranking grab sample data, I'd love to use your nations of the world / UN members counts __if__ you are still recording them.

I've bookmarked your page.

One of the things I was eventually planning to do for the IDU was to make some sort of graphic showing perhaps the change in crime rates or apathy in our nations ... with the goal being to just add a bit of color to those numbers.

Have you thought about how to graphically represent regional data?

It is a lot of work. I do mine by hand, which is why there are gaps and why Groot Gouda and myself take turns on an as needed basis.

Is Sunset still around? Do you know how he / she grabbed this data?

He's still around, kinda. As for information gathering, well... he did it himself. Occationally people would send him the data, but he largely did it by loading up each nation and copying down the number.

By HAND! By HAND, I tell you! And he didn't have none of this fancy-shmancy 'tabbed browsers' neither!

Too bad though they stopped being maintained... My defense ranking is 2 steps higher. :p

I had never given the idea of graphically representing the data much thought; although, now that you mention it, it seems like a good idea. This is especially true when each category gets more history to it.

What kind of information would be graphically represented? Certainly some simple timelines could be developed, showing the progress of a nation over time. Nothing else comes to mind right now unfortunately.

As for May...I will make my best efforts to record the nations of the world every day, but some things are coming up (moving cities and job hunting) that will take me away from Nationstates for a bit. Perhaps I'll ask someone in my region to take over the job for a bit.

Now that I know there is a bit of interest, I wouldn't mind making my little project database driven. It's all done up in Excel right now, because it makes those webpages quickly, and those little tabs look good. But if it was database driven, we could quickly derive some stats out of it.

I'd really appreciate that. I already borrowed a few missing data points from your data and Sunset's on Saturday. :)

As for the graphical representation of data ... I think a way that would be interesting and dynamic would be to perhaps use several of the industrial / rich-poor divide graphs to come up with a new economic measure, perhaps national bond values, and to just give the nations in your region some starting point and push the bond values up and down based on changes in any of these categories.

Another fun graph might be tourism, which I would think crime rate, civil freedoms, environment, and health care should be big factors.

The basic idea is to take advantage of several different categories and come up with regional stastics that will add "flavour" to our regions.

Those sound like fantastic ideas, Mikitivity! Also sounds like quite a bit of number crunching, but as soon as somebody figures out the formula to use and whatnot, it would be relatively easy to implement (if it was based off a more automated system -- instead of doing it by hand).

Just in case anybody has archived this thread, the International Democratic Union regional UN Top 10 Lists have been moved to our new forum (this is a sub-forum):

http://s10.invisionfree.com/IDU/index.php?showforum=14

I'll be away for several weeks, but after that time, if people want any files I'm maintaining, please feel free to ask, and I'll be happy to email out updates from time to time. :)

I'm also building links to other UN Reports Listings on our page, so if you are reading this and are collecting information, please post it here so when I return in June I can make use of your efforts too! Thanks!

A bit of gravedigging, but that is in part because I was away in most of May and thought some *improvements* to what we've been doing might interest other players. :)

While I was gone, Groot Gouda wrote a script that automatically grabs the top 20 nations in our region, and also returns the frequency of nations in several bins along with the number of nations, regions, UN delegates, and total UN members.

The IDU (by taking turns) has been able to start keeping some really interesting data related to the UN Reports.

For example, today the script gave me this in a few seconds:

2005-07-01

Although we are just archiving IDU UN Reports for our own purposes, try out Groot Gouda's script. I'm sure he would be happy to pass this along to other regions. I don't know all the details, but I would imagine there is a way that other NationStates players can benefit from this.
