World Population

I was wondering how one might possibly go about measuring the population of the NationStates world. When last I checked, 124705 nations were listed in the current UN rankings (for healthiest). Of course, the populations of the nations in the NationStates world vary widely: many new nations that exist now but will soon be forgotten have populations of <50 million, middle-sized nations like ours have populations in the 1 and 2 billions, and the oldest nations have populations up to 4 billion or so.

One idea I had would be to take a statistical sample of the nations in NationStates, find the average population, and multiply by the number of nations. The problem here lies in actually taking the sample: clicking enough nations and gathering their population data would be time-consuming, and one would have trouble selecting a random assortment of nations.

Questions? Comments? Most importantly, good ideas? I think it really would be interesting to make an estimate at the world population.

Since it changes so dramatically day by day I would say it was impossible

You're right... I also think that it would be entirely impossible to come up with a precise number for the world's population that would be valid for more than maybe a day. But I was thinking of something closer to an estimate, with few enough significant figures as to not be affected by the day-to-day fluctuations in population.

If the world population were, say, 1 quadrillion, then an extra nation of 5 million here or there would make very little difference.

A total world population thing would be a good idea. Possible added feature of NS.

With 124705 nations, World population is a minimum of 623,525 million. World population must be at least a trillion then.

127,095 nations now :p

The number of new nations is very good. :)
Just wait the second update of the day though... It's extremely hard to give even a day's average.

I asked this question some time ago in Technical...the answer I got was in the area of 71 trillion.

And it actually doesn't shift that much - the number of dying nations counterbalances the number of new nations.

An easier way would be just to have everyone post their NS population on this thread and we can count them all up.

I'll start. I have 4.576 billion.

Trying to get everyone to post here would not work.

Yeah, and if you're like me and you have a whole bunch of puppets lying around, you're not gonna want to go and add them all up. :P

However, I'd guesstimate ~9-10 billion for all my nations, combined.
