666 is reputed to be the biblical mark of the beast.
My knowledge of Revelation is sketchy, but it goes something like this:
When Jesus returns, those alive who are with God will go with God. Those who are not will remain on earth for some-odd number of years to endure the abomination that causes desolation. They will wear the mark of the beast.

Yeah, either it said something about the number on them or the upside-down pentagram. I think the number is more accurate though.

The odd number of years is seven.
And even at that point in time, there will be some (some 144 thou, I think...) who decided that God is the God to follow. Everyone else will be like "to heck with that, I want to live" and they'll take the mark of the beast.
The upside down pentagram gets its witchcraft connotations several centuries after the book of Revelations was written.
