What's your Nation State's national sport?

Sorry if this has been done before but I did a search for "nation" and "sport" and nothing similar came up so here goes...

What would your Nation State's national sport be if it had one. You know: like the USA has *laughs*Football... and Canada has hockey. And Italy has soccer. And Spain has Soccer. And England has (currently) Rugby, because it's the only thing we're half decent at.

So what's yours? I'll do some poll ones but no doubt loads of people have sports I've not listed. Hey ho. :)

I'm rather fond of Smackage

rules are simple: theres 3 Scenarios

1) one on one: two competitors get very very drunk, are given blunted swords, stuck onto a 10 x 10 platform that rocks. Whoever doesnt fall off, still stands, breathes, and / or is still conscoius wins

2) team game: same rules as above, cept with 5 man squads spread out on multiple of the platforms

3) brawl: team game without the teams.

very entertaining to watch.

They don't have any of those sports in Ghargonia. You might want to edit in an 'other' option on that poll, because you've missed off so many real and imaginary sports that it's not funny.

Two main forms of armed melee combat:

Hocket: A long (6 foot) pole. If this weapon is purely for friendly competition, then one end is simply blunt, for clubbing. If this weapon is just that, a weapon, then it is tipped with a sharp spike. The other end is always a large hook, that looks like a cross between a scythe and a hockey stick. The art of hocket typically involves an elegant fight with these poles, with opponents wielding them like a cross between a staff and a spear, using the hook to grab or grapple.
Hocket is a highly popular form of entertainment as well as a deadly skill. It is not commercialised as sport here is; arenas are located in many places, frequently in reekhouses (pubs, to you or I, basically). People simply bring their own weapon, step up and fight someone. No teams, no famous sportsmen, no profit and no loss. It is a demonstration of skill and warrior instincts, as well as a lot of fun for both the competitors and the spectators. These friendly competitions only result in a death by accident, or through lack of skill.

Dachet: Two, dual-ended blades, small, one held in each hand. Blades are elegant, pure terralium, and curved in opposite directions. A series of small, but fast and powerful moves makes up the basic style. A form of 'twitch' combat; the blades are so short that the moves are small, and the margin for error miniscule. Typically used as a means of challenging someone, often to the death. Still exists in a non-lethal form for entertainment, with competitors using wooden, blunt versions of the dachets. The nature of dachet is just as non-commercial as hocket; no teams, no companies, no major events. Just people wanting to engage in the sport.

One main form of unarmed combat:

Atuk: Raw power, combined with elegant defences and simple dodges. Instead of working your way around your opponent's defences, or waiting for him or her to make a mistake, Atuk typically involves using power and speed to smash through their defence. Finishing moves also require full use of body weight and momentum, and are usually lethal.
A popular sport, similar to dachet and hocket, especially when no weapons are nearby.

All three are used not only for entertainment, but are also basic training in the military. They are also used in challenges, along with various other styles.

you missed the option for the nations with proper educational systems, you know, the ones that did away with the Tribal need for sporting events because they realised they are about nothing more than Factionalising the people.

People might enjoy sport in my country but as long as they do it behind closed doors and don't hurt anybody, thats okay,

you do know that wars are fought with Guns and rifles and missiles these days??

My powerful economy and my people's education standards mean we could field a smart and dangerous army very quickly.

My lack of sports simply means they won't be fighting each other over coloured scarfs.

I'll check my NationState tomorrow, and if it's still there I'll assume your barbaric people's invasion failed.

I guess it depends on the season ....
Summer : Wallyball.
Fall/Winter : Word association run-ons.
Winter/Spring : Various jumping sports in the nude and w/a dollop of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter"

As for any other season, there really isn't one, since my country is lucky enough to be on one of the broken-off ice floe that wander around one of the currents up here in the north. So when we have a spring or fall that isn't really just a stunted winter for whatever short period it may inhabit, it functions essentially like a leap day would.
Other sports are in the waiting but committees have lured many of the naive, willing and hapless petitioners into the cul-de-sacs (as the saying goes) and are being quietly strangled ....

My nation's sport is Chgastök, a sport in which 16 people, 8-a-side, ride camels with 'Drðs' instered in their rears to force them to go faster. Each rider has a long-sticked mallet with a large hole in one side. There is one ball, and the aim is to get the ball over the 'goal' - somewhat like a rugby post, but smaller. The rider can hit the ball with the mallet or scoop it up in the hole, which is difficult and essential to scoring, as the ball must be flung over the bar. The other side of the mallet, as well as being used to hit the ball, can also be used to smash opponents, who wear protective clothing but can fall off their camels if hit.

Quick question, Mr Moderator:

Why on Earth have you moved this topic? It has absolutely nothing to do with gameplay whatsoever. It was a General enquiry about what people would have as their national sport were their nationstate an actual physical place. Now, while I'm not really that bothered that you've moved it, I am rather surprised.

Or is it just that the inclusion of the word "sport" means it should automatically be moved to a forum concerning the word "game"?

;)

My national sport is R&D contests, Contestants in different categories have one week to come up with the most innovative and useful invention. As the prize for the grand champions is massive, new inventions are constantly produced. The main drawback is that the shacks in training facilities kinda... sorta... explode. Fortunately, no-one has died, save maybe people charged with multiple 1st degree murders. "Small Arms" Category "Helpers" (read - targets)
