Be evil, you know like be oppresive, take away their rights and shit.... it's kinda easy.
anytime anything comes up about elections, choose the one that takes most of their rights away, like cancelling all elections is a good one.

The only way you can change this is through your issues. If you want to change it fast, you can set your issues to come in twice a day. ;) Do this in your settings.

that could also steer you towards fascism, which is also totalitarian.
Being on the left is mainly economical. You can treat your people however you want and still come out communist if you restrict the economy.
