Anyone designed a map of their region?

I have started a simple version for my new region, the Democratic Alliance.

We have had maps in our region, The Heartland, for more than two years now, although they have come a long way from their rudimentary beginnings. For those who are interested, here are the current maps for the four districts in our region:

Ineptia: The Heartlands maps are very nice. I noticed different countries had different levels of detail. How do you determine the level of detail and what graphic program are you using?

Asia's was recently redone to make it more colorful. Here it is:

My map is here (http://shade.jonpearse.net/Map.jpg); it's actually a 3d relief map made out of plaster. Colours and nation names were added later in Photoshop. Only Tsaraine is an actual nation; the rest are NPCs, there to fill up space.

For those wanting to make maps, I've found this (http://www.zompist.com/howto2.htm) good in the past, although you can't really do it with MS Paint. Layers and some kind of antialiasing ability are required; Photoshop is excellent.

Alternatively, I made this (http://shade.jonpearse.net/Island.gif) by cutting and pasting bits from a satellite map of the Earth; it's Borneo, plus Newfoundland, the Caucaus, part of the Eastern coast of the United States, one of the Japanese islands, a lake in asia, a river in the Ukraine, and a bit of coast from Chile. Again, Photoshop was used. The map used was from here (http://www.space-graphics.com/earth_intro.htm), but I don't recommend trying to download any of them on a dialup modem!

I don't get any of this.
How can you just make up a map or put your countries on an already made one. It makes no sense. This is all too complicated.
