Recruitment Spam - A Rant

Come on. I created a puppet nation (name not yet disclosed) and before I could use it, I had already recieved two recruitment telegrams. That's not the first time, though. Great Freedom, the nation I created to get Nanakaland resurrected last month, also got TG spam until I changed the national motto to include "not new, old player returned" (and I still got one more spam TG after that). I myself get occasional TG spam (several in Lazarus and two while in the region I'm in to stay which is not a recruitment region unlike the Pacifics or Lazurus).

And yet, these same people would not want me to spam them with "join my region" telegrams and would probably block me if I did. What makes them special enough to spam me?

And these people probably hate spam in their emails. What makes NationStates' telegram inbox so different?

I am sick and tired of recruitment spam. Come on people. Why would I want to join your region if I'm in one other the Pacifics? And yet I got two under my main nation of Nanakaland after I was already settled in a nice region.

And I just created a new nation for an intersting RP I might do and I get two recruitment telegrams two minutes apart within six minutes of creation. Come on. That's really pathetic. If anything, spamming my telegram inbox has the adverse effect of having me avoid the spammer's region. What loser sits around all day looking and then copy & pastes the same message to each new nation (changing some things to make you look special)?

Perhaps creating a regional promotion thread in the Gameplay forum or the Yellow Pages seen stickied above this is enough. Perhaps not. But if you focus more time on improving your region (including adding regional boards) and less time spamming peoples telegram inbox, then perhaps word of mouth would be enough. Even try posting on the regional message boards of a pacific, but telegraming each new nation (and sometimes old nations like Nanakaland) is just plain pathetic.

Just think about that next time you want to send a spam telegram into someone's inbox.

I couldn't agree more. Though I realise that starting up new regions is getting harder and harder these days, what's the point of sitting infront of your computer all day sending thousands of telegrams out? I don't know about the rest of you, but I personaly prefer quality over quantity. I see some player-created regions with hundreds of nations. It seems that these are the ones that send recruitment spam on a regular basis. What for? What satisfaction do you get out of having hundreds of inactive nations in your region? I say, if you are looking for people to join your region, stick to looking for them on the forums. Post a small recruitment thread in Gameplay, and develop IC connections with other nations. If your IC allies are looking for a new region, they may join yours, since they know and trust you. And getting that one active RPer to join you is worth a thousand yes's from people who could care less. Am I ranting? I guess maybe I am. Well, that's all then. :)

Come on. I created a puppet nation (name not yet disclosed) and before I could use it, I had already recieved two recruitment telegrams.

Since it's legal to send them if your in the feeder regions, it's a moot point since we don't know its a puppet.

And these people probably hate spam in their emails. What makes NationStates' telegram inbox so different?

Because, it's part of the game and a tactic to get nations to join regions.

I am sick and tired of recruitment spam. Come on people. Why would I want to join your region if I'm in one other the Pacifics?

Good recruiters follow the rules and do not recruit outside the feeders; thus, only a small percentage are not following the rules. Please, do not lump all us recruiters into one big box, because we're clearly not in one box.

I, myself, strictly follow the recruiting rules and keep careful records to make sure I'm within NS bounds.

What loser sits around all day looking and then copy & pastes the same message to each new nation (changing some things to make you look special)?

* shrugs *

I guess I'm a loser then...

While I don't sit around all day, I do telegram 5-7 a day depending on when I'm on my computer. I also do it while doing other things, so, it's also a background task for me.

Perhaps creating a regional promotion thread in the Gameplay forum or the Yellow Pages seen stickied above this is enough. Perhaps not.

It's not, because most new nations don't know that they can find a region to join that way.

But if you focus more time on improving your region (including adding regional boards) and less time spamming peoples telegram inbox, then perhaps word of mouth would be enough.

With thousands of regions, chances are word of mouth is not enough. Regional off-site forums are not enough. Regional web sites are not enough.

Telegramming has been proven to be an effective, the most effective tool in NS to gain regional membership.

Even try posting on the regional message boards of a pacific, but telegraming each new nation (and sometimes old nations like Nanakaland) is just plain pathetic.

It's not pathetic, it's a tactic as is everything else that's conducted in this game.

Posting on the regional boards doesn't amount to much, because it's also usually scrolled off with cruel taunts to the natives of the feeder regions.

I thank you for your post and I appreciate that recruitment messages can be very frustrating. When I joined the game I spent many months in a feeder region and the constant telegramming and posting used to annoy me as much as anyone. Though I for the most part just ignored them.

Now though I am on the other side of the fence having created my own region and I assure you that growing a region in NS is the hardest thing I have ever done. I have put to bear all my experience and as you will see from my nation’s stats I am not a newbie. One of the first things I have noticed (and this is only a personal opinion) is that almost every from of possible recruitment, apart from making a thread here, is frowned upon in some form or another.

Making threads here personally I have been very lucky with and I am so very, very grateful to the few nations that have decided to join my region. Unfortunately though once you have posted here a few times that avenue also become less and less useful, because not may players take part in this forum.

So, where does that leave us founders? Regional advertising on the various permitted HQ’s frowned upon by the natives and telegramming nations in those regions regarded as spam by the owners. The problem also with the placing of adverts in the regional HQ’s is for the most part ineffective, leaving only the telegram campaign for most players and there of course, they have no way of knowing who is creating the nation.

Though I understand your frustration, I do respectfully ask for a little understanding on your part and those of others in similar positions to your good self. While certainly as you say within six minutes of creating a new puppet you had a telegram, which seems excessive, please also consider that there are thousands of players in this game. By my logic and humble opinion, that would mean that someone is almost always looking at the feeder regions with an eye to recruitment.

I have worked very hard on my region and like to tonight I am sitting on my laptop, doing the same again with only two hours sleep and several very large cups of coffee behind me. My request therefore for next time you get one of those telegrams, just try and think that it might actually be someone like me working away, trying to do what’s best for their region’s members and never was there an intention to personally spam you.

Many, many thanks for your understanding; it is very much appreciated, certainly from me anyways.

Tuesday Heights, I know that there's some good recruiters who play by the rules. It's a rant though. I'm supposed to complain. I wasn't referring to all recruiters, only the ones that annoyed me.

I know, but I was also defending the recruiters - not the ones that are annoying, but people like myself - just to even out the rant. ;) No hard feelings...
