The Non-Human Union

Q&A on the NHU
So big shot, what’s the NHU all about?
The Non-Human Union is an alliance of predominantly, but not exclusively, sapient (able to rationalise, has language, build technology etc) non-human nations. The NHU emerged out the Non-Human Alliance and key founding members are still participants of the NHU. Primarily the Non-Human Union is about ensuring the acceptable civil and political standards of all non-human sentients everywhere are respected and protected.
I see it says “non-human” that means you hate humans right?
Absolutely not. This is common assumption made by many nations and a rumour some have attempted to spread about. We have several nations with a human majority co-existing with primarily non-human nations. Although some people argue for a name change to say “The sapient Union” non-human for all intents and purposes best summarises what the primary focus of our organisation is.
what sort of alliance is the NHU?
The NHU is actually much more like a union then an alliance but there are varying degrees of membership according to the national interest of each member state. There are military, economic, political, social and legal and geographical layers of membership involved. The NHU has a constitution, several committees, a home region (and continent), a central bank and market, a judicial system and independent military force.
*Military*
The United Defence Forces was originally composed to defend the home region of the NHU, Greenfields. The UDF trains in co-operation with each nation’s independent military forces and nations can allocate certain units to be in reserve for the UDF. The UDF however is also used in official peace keeping missions and interventions on behalf of the NHU. The UDF however cannot enter a member nation without permission and operations must be passed in the NHU Parliament.
*Social*
Many non-human states exist in isolation from the human hegemony. For this they develop highly individualised cultures which can be threatened by the intrusion of other societies, human or otherwise. The NHU is interested in preserving the cultural identity of each member state and assisting in the prospering of the arts, media and culture of member states.
*Economic*
Officially the NHU requests that all member adopt the Union Paw as their national currency. A single currency creates a “level playing field” between states in developing trade. It also removes the risk of major currency value shifts which can cause inflation, unemployment or chronic devaluation. However the increasing prosperity of members has weakened the drive for currency membership although it’s still popular.
Furthermore the NHU unlike most economic organisation does not prohibit one economic model over another. Capitalist and socialist economies are equally present in the NHU. Each nation that adopts the Union Paw has an automatic seat on the board of the Central Bank which regulates inflation, interest rates, currency circulation and allocates loans and banking for most of the governments in the NHU as well as the NHU itself.
The Central Market provides a Board of discussion for members in regulating labour and prices, over seeing fair market place competition (where applicable) and generally promotes the development for fair and sustainable trading between states. It also provides assistance in developing states’ economies if requested.
*geographical*
The home region or Greenfields is also located on the maps at the NHU forum. Any member is welcome to claim a vacant area of the map.
*political*
The NHU has it’s own Constitution which establishes a NHU Parliament. The parliament has two houses, the Senate which is open to all members represented by ‘one vote one value’ and the Regional Duma establish to preserve the interests of the regional members. This creates a general balance between the will of the NHU membership and the will of those geographically linked to the NHU. The Constitution covers a broad area of subjects so that all issues are clearly stated and understood.
The position of Regional Delegate is open to any member of the region Greenfields and they chair the Regional Duma. An elected General Secretary is chosen in the Senate to over see the general running of the NHU. The Constitution also ensures that a minimum “average” ranking in political and civil rights is upheld by all members.
*legal*
The Supreme Court has limited supernational authority and is primarily interested in protecting Humane Rights. In disputes each party shall nominate a judge with the Senate choosing a third judge. This system is being reviewed but currently serves effectively. The Parliament is able to over turn and legislate new laws. Each law has a varying degree of influence over national laws, can be challenged and requires majority support.
Sounds interesting but what’s the catch?
There is no catch, a lot of the programs of the NHU are voluntary but we have been highly successful in getting members to participate. The NHU is not interested in manipulating internal domestic affairs or creating some sort of united non-human Empire. The NHU works for peace, co-existence, sustainable prosperity, a fair go, liberty, humane rights and equality.
If it’s so great why are you recruiting, surely it sells itself?
The more the merrier old chum. For a while things have been very quite as like most NS players our membership are primarily students or young adults with employment. Because we all come from diverse time zones (and hemispheres) it can be difficult to continue a RP or dialogue however as the holiday season approaches now is the best time to start building up our membership and getting creative!
One last thing, how in heck do you pay for everything?
Ah. To calculate the contribution made a simple calculation is made based on the economic capacity of each state to pay. Thos with “frightening” economies pay the largest amount (as a % of their total GDP) while those with the smallest economies pay the least but all have equal access to services provided. The calculations are only used to provide estimate funding for programs and thanks to the continued economic improvement the NHU is pretty much rolling in it
Did I have to join your region?
No that’s not a compulsory aspect of membership although it does help with working out statistics (compiled somewhat irregularly) on funding as well as tracking those who slip below “average”. Join the region also allows you access to the Greenfields map and creates a lot of opportunity for good RP.
