NSwiki now open!

Goobergunchia

I'm pleased to announce the official opening of NSwiki! This is a wiki (a collection of interlinked web pages, any of which can be visited and edited by anyone at any time from any place) designed to give information about NationStates in an easy-reference manner. Essentially, it's an open-source, open-content encyclopedia about NationStates.

If you've seen Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org), this is the same kind of thing, only about NationStates.

NSwiki can be found at http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki.

EDIT: If you have a question about the wiki that needs to be answered by me, the best place to put it is here (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php?title=User_talk:Goobergunch&action=edit&section=new). I check that page far more frequently then I do this thread.

NSwiki hit its 500th article on 7 October 2004.

How do I start / create an entry for my region?.
Edit: when I posted this, I misread 'region' as 'nation'. Visit the InfoBox Page (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/NSwiki:Info_boxes) for region creation templates just like these nation templates.

Great question, even though I know you already built one.

Paste the following into your address bar
http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Your_nation_name
Change Your_nation_name to your nation name (not the Federal Republic of Your Nation Name), and hit [Enter] (it's on your keyboard, ya dope)

Then paste the following into the Edit box that appears
{{Infobox_Nation |
flag=Flag URL |
region=[[Region]] |
motto=Motto |
map=[Map URL], or No Map Available Yet |
language=Language(s) |
capital=Capital |
population=Population |
currency=Currency |
leader=National Leader
}}]
After each Equals sign (=), chance each item to what is listed on your nation page or what you've thought up. The -, [, | and ] symbols need to remain where they are. You can't change leader to national anthem, either - just use what you can, and make the rest blank

After the final }}, start a new line and write whatever you want about your nation. There is a link to the help page from there - use it. Final Version might look like this:
{{Infobox_Nation |
flag=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/frisbeeteria/fris/saucers.gif |
region=[[Jokeaday]] |
motto=Death to all fanatics! |
map= |
language=English |
capital=Greenspan |
population=1.6 billion (Oct 04) |
currency=FrisB |
leader=G. Winston Riegle, Director
}}

Why wait? You can always start it today and add more next week, or next month, etc.

Creating a nationpage is easy. Go to the Nation Creation Page (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Template:Infobox_Region) and follow the instructions.

Any statement on my request - that the nation infobox automatically shows an up-to-date population, rather than the player having to update it? It seems a bit silly to have to update it manually, since it changes frequently in the game.

just have a filter on each nation's page that reads the population and puts it in the infobox.
Knootoss
15-11-2004, 01:35
We had figured *that* out. How to code it is another matter though.
Crazed Marines
15-11-2004, 02:23
Well, the C variant would be something similar to:

If word=alpha:
count++;

If word=num:
printf ("Population=&c million"; word);

I'll check with my programming teacher tomorrow about that and ask her if she could help with this. She's C, C++, HTML, and Java certified.
Crazed Marines
15-11-2004, 23:16
Ok, I asked about the HTML filter and she said she'd get it for me later. I'm also going to ask the webmaster of a site I'm part of later about it.

But I also came to this. Why don't you just ask the thirdgeek people how they did their coding?
Goobergunchia
15-11-2004, 23:46
That's not the problem. I could fairly easily write a PHP script to pull the requisite data off. The problem is that I don't know how to integrate it with the wikicode.
Crazed Marines

have a simple program pull it off and post it in a link that names itself after the population.

We know about these. It's just that the wiki code doesn't have a built in way to convert XML to wiki. Goober is working on PHP code to do it, but several searches on Mediawiki and XML have indicated that other wikis have the same difficulty. Haven't found a solution yet.

Crazed Marines, every page has a "This page has been accessed xx times." counter. Something else you looking for?

Knootoss
20-11-2004, 20:09
Oh, I am sure someone else visited it. But there is this issue: make more pages then just your own nation page!

There are a lot of background things that you can make into pages. Characters, wars, political parties etc. Those make a nations entry much more fun to read. In addition, there are "metapages" with concepts important for everyone in NS. (like political theories - Marxism in Nationstates, or the entry on wank or godmoding.) Those things should be a part of the Wiki as well.

I added Friday a section on anti-tank rifles. The page was missing without it....lol....

And before you ask, they DO exist. It started in 1917-1918 when the British showed the Tank on the battlefield. Mauser came out with the Tankgavair (tank rifle) model 1918. It was hated because of its size, weight, and ammo usage especially since it could only penetrate 3 inches of armor at 100 yards.

There's been a fair amount of linkspamming on NSwiki recently. Generally, they use <-- tags so it won't show up on the page itself - only when you open it to edit it will you see a long list of links (designed to boost their pagerank in Google). If you come across this, please revert the page to the last clean version, if possible, and report the vandalism.
