To UN or not to UN

Im sort of new to NationStates, and one of the most prominant things in the game is the UN, and I was wondering whether or not to join. Does it really do that much for you? How does it help/hurt your nation?
I just want to hear arguments for and against, then I'll make my decision.

Depends on what you want to do in the game. If you want to participate in regional politics, you really should join the UN, hard to affect them much otherwise.
The resolutions and proposals that the UN passes are all very dumb, as most people here would tell you, and if you care about your nation's stats, it's frustrating seeing them messed up.
Though if you enjoy Role Playing more, or simply hanging out on the forums :wink: ...being in the UN or not means nothing, and you'll have more control over your own nation's policies.

One thing I have found with the UN, is that as Unfree People have said, it messes with the stats, and I got my nation JUST how I want it.
I find UN a waste of time if you dont intend on playing the issues side of the game (i.e. what will change your nation otherwise)
