We, the Benevolent Empire of Assor-Hu, apologize, but...

We must ask:
How do we do this?
If we want something to happen, i.e., setting up an alliance or something like that, how do we do it? We love to roleplay, but must we roleplay for everything?
We apologize deeply, but we are newbs, and wish to learn.
If this thread is in the wrong place, we apologize again.

You need not roleplay for everything. There are plenty of different ways of having alliances, not all involve forum-based role-play. It can be as simple as joining a largish region and playing a part in its internal political structure.

Yes, but how do we do that? Are there some special controls? Is there a page or something? Can we take part in the politics of regions not our own? We are very out-of-the-loop here. :?

Role-playing is something you can do on your own, or with anyone else in NationStates on the forums.

Gameplay is political activity, where the basic unit is the endorsement - to take part your nation needs to be in the UN, and game rules enforce one UN nation per person, which makes it fair. Gameplay includes politics within your region - becoming UN delegate or a member of the government - and between regions, in the form of invasions, defences and alliances.

If you want to do this, you'll need to pick a region. I recommend regions of 20-200 in size, big enough to have some interaction but not so big that you get lost, or replies to something you post on the regional boards scroll off before you see them. Check the Unofficial NS Directory thread, which is a sticky at the top of this forum. Regions are listed by geography, politics, theme, etc. - also whether they're invaders/crashers or defenders. You'll also find many of the more active regions have their own offsite boards.

I'm delegate for a region, Urbanites, (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_region/region=urbanites) but I don't usually say "move to our region". Instead I'll say: take a look at a few regions, read their World Factbook entry and messages on the regional boards, pick the one where you like the style of the people there and where you think you'll fit in and enjoy yourself! :)

Well, that's no good.
We can't find our UN E-mail. We applied, and we're sure it was sent, but the spam blocker must have got it.

Oh well. We'll find it at some point.
So anyway...
What region should we join? We don't want to remain in that hellhole of an ocean, the South Pacific.

That's up to you of course. As I said, you're welcome to check out Urbanites (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_region/region=urbanites). Or if we're not for you, check the Directory:

And I'm sure you'll get plenty of recruitment telegrams now ...

Might I suggest stopping by August Locale of Knurlyhood? I'd try and describe it, but it regularly defies that. Just check it out, and if it appeals to you, send a telegram my way and I'll give you the password.

Easy enough, simply go to the nation's page that you want to send a telegram to, and scroll down to the bottom. There's a box to put text in, and a button that says send on it.
