The first invaders were either 100 Nations of Conquest or the Farkers, I don't know which was first but I know that the Heartland was attacked quite early on.

I don't think the Heartland invasion by 100 Nations of Conquest was the first invasion but it was the most noticeable invasion up to that point. I believe there were several invasions of smaller, less prominent regions prior to that, because I can remember rumblings. Ineptia went from region to region begging for help to retake his region and it was shortly after, that regional founders with regional control was instituted. Yes, I'd say the Heartland was surprised because if Ineptia knew that he was the next target he could have easily defended his region by having all the natives join the UN and endorse him.
The nation who led the invasion had a great flag. It was one of the first animated flags I'd seen on NS.
I believe that originally, invaders just took the UN delegacy and then left because there weren't enough of them to hold the region permanently. When the natives found out about the invasion, most regions were able to take back the delegacy because at that time you couldn't lock nations out of a region or eject them. It wasn't until the ACC came along after regional control was instituted that an invader was able to permanently take a region.
I thought the Farkers split off from 100 Nations of Conquest over invasion methodology but I could be wrong. You'd have to ask Ackbar.

The Heartland wasn't the first, but it was the most high profile at the time. Oh how I long for the simpler times before all the regional controls.

Good Question, but Yes the Farkers were the First.
I think Ackbar may know the first.
I have an idea but am not too sure.

The Farkers were not the first..kind of. There was a group (I want to say December 2001) that performed the first invasion. I believe you'll find the region that was invaded first was AXIS. The group that performed this invasion is now part of the group known as the farkers however they weren't at the time.

AXIS was definitely pretty early on, before even I arrived at the game in early January 2003.
In December 2002 the region Germany went in a war with USSR that involved invasions on Germany, USSR, Cuba, and Poland. You would have to ask one of those involved more about it, but there's a short history section (http://ussrns.vefed.com/history.html) at the USSR website on it.
