Can a new nation really accomplish anything?

15-02-2004, 22:28
Many players join NationStates because they want to rule their country effectively. Make conquests, build an empire, become a superpower and such. I find that rather impossible though. Every single piece of land is claimed, and since this game is over a year old already, there are dozens of nations that have over two billion citizens, and a lot more that have over billion. Superpowers like Menelmacar and Melkor Unchained that can wipe half a year old nation with ease. And alliances like Arda and ToY.

Well yeah, most people think that character roleplays are the way to go, and that you don't really need to build your nation that much. But running a nation is what you do in NS, and making it as much of a power as possible is certainly a goal for many. Hey, what do you think, can a new nation really accomplish anything anymore? If somebody joins NS now, the nation starts with 5 million people. A nation needs at least billion to be actually considered something. And even then, only by smaller nations - by the time that said nation reaches billion, others already have three. So no chance to become a real power. I find that rather boring in a game where you run a nation.. The "winners" have already been announced.

What do you think?

Just some random thoughts :/

you dont really win in NS you run a country how you'd want it run, population has nothing to do with it (does it?)

I think it all depends which of the two main NationStates games you're playing!

• If you're role-playing wars and stuff, yes you need a decent size population, economy and military before you can "send in 5000 n00ks ... all your base are belong to us, ha ha!"

• If you're enjoying playing with issues and choices for your nation, size doesn't matter. And anyone can join in the regional action: in invasions and defenses, the basic unit is the endorsement, only UN nations can do that – and every player can have only have one UN member.

If you're going to war it matters because you can't have more than your current population.

There's a lot more to roleplaying on NationStates than simply going to war.

There are many things to do, if you are in the UN you can use your vote to help keep invaders like the ADN from taking over helpless regions like they did in United States. I would recommend asking for thepassword and endorsing Ben Franklin, he needs your Help to free his region from tyranny.

Interesting.

The ADN are not invaders; quite the opposite in fact. See the threads about United States to review both sides of the argument. I'd appreciate the propaganda coming to an end, but from someone who hates defenders I guess that's too much to ask. It would be nice if this could stay in the threads it has already hijacked, though.

Hey, I'm over a billion, and I consider myself to be very nice. I am the founder of a prosperous region, 00000000000000000, and just today I was forced to eject usurpers who threatened the region's security. And besides, I'm a tree-hugging collective farm, and you can't get much nicer than that.

Exact answer:
Population / Daily Gain
> 10M / 1M
10M - 25(?)M / 1M - 3M
25(?)M - 100(?)M / 3M - 5M
< 100(?)M / 5M - 8M
