The Armed Republic of Black Springs is a large, safe nation, remarkable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-working, intelligent population of 23 million enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms, while the political process is open and the people's right to vote held sacrosanct.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Commerce, and Education. The average income tax rate is 59%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Gambling.
It is illegal to make racist remarks in public, meat is a luxury afforded only to the wealthy, corporations donate huge sums of money to favored politicians, and the government is seen to favor Catholics. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Black Springs's national animal is the rattlesnake, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the the black pearl.
Black Springs is ranked 546th in the region and 6,943rd in the world for Most Politically Free Nations.
