I thought this would be the best place to post this... I'm looking for a region that would allow a nation with the sort of government I run to join it's ranks. It's a bit morally reprehensible, but at the end of the day, it works.
Delance is publiclly a Capitalist Democracy. The President wears his sharp, expensive little suit at Press Conferences and smiles for the camera, shaking a hand or two. Every eight years, the politcians do their regular song and dance to convince people to vote for them. Occasionally a true politician will come around, but usually it all boils down to who has the catchiest theme song or slogan, or who is the most famous.
It almost always degrades to this point in a Democracy, which is the reason Delance is truely a Dictatorship behind the scenes. The elections are a well played out charade to keep the people happy, and it's worked for God know's how long. While this may sound unmoral, you have no idea how much chaos the system would fall into if people had the right to vote. Celebrities would be leading entire governments, just because they are well-known and pretty on screen.
But on the other hand, Delance is also shockingly pro-choice. Gay marriage is completely legal, you can worship whatever God you want, abortion is completely by the government, prostitution is a legalized, safe, and government-controlled buisness, and marijuana is legal as long as you buy it from a legal dealer. (This is why many pot-heads hold onto their receipts.) You can do just about whatever you want in your personal life, as long as you don't get in the government's way. Civilians cannot legally buy firearms unless they get a costly license, which requires going through mountains of red tape and a lot of money, so firearms are used only by Law Enforcement officers and Military forces. Delance also uses Capital Punishment, but tries to keep the executions as humane as possible.
The Military in Delance is quite similiar to that of the US Army, except all the dellusions of grandeur are wiped from the soldiers mind when they are recruited. They are taught they are not some war hero, and that life in the military isn't some comfortable, easy existence. It has cut down desertion and suicide rates to almost nothing during wartime condtions, and to nonexistence in peacetime. The Delance military has not adopted the OICW or Land-Warrior systems due to the fact that they rely too heavily on electronics, which can be rendered useless by several factors and are a general bother for the troops. The country is still small, though, and has yet to develope any WMD's or substancial space programs.
