Been playing a couple of days and my nation has been classified as a New York Times Democracy - what is one of them?

I know it's probably a dumb question but I've got the following going against me
a) I'm not American
b) I don't read said paper

Just interested...so if anyone could enlighten me I'd be much appreciated

A system in which sensationalism and public opinion, heavily influenced by mass media, dominate the political arena. At least, thats what it makes me think of when I hear it.
