What the Gameplay Forum is for, in a general sense

Talk about regional politics, and why llamas are a cooler national animal than squirrels.

Compiled from the ideas of Qaaolchoura and others at http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100826

The Gameplay Forum is neither another RP forum, nor a new Tech Forum, but rather, a forum for discussing puppets, parody nations, UN rankings, in-game empires, the issues surrounding region crashing, region hoppers, etc. That is to say a forum for those activities which exist in the NS World regional domain and are not truly role-play, but are semi-IC, and therefore fall into a sort of no-man's land between Technical, NationStates, Moderation, and General. A forum, essentially, for players of the NS World side of the game to discuss their technical maneuvres and the underlying politics.

The Gameplay Forum is therefore broadly for NS World issues, not Forum issues. This would include:

Discussion of in-game technical maneuvres and the underlying politics, more specifically:

Regional politics, inter-regional relations, rivalries and alliances.
Discussion of and responses to events in NS World, such as diplomatic crises, etc.
The merits, tactics and etiquette of region crashing and defending.

Regional publicity and PR, in the form of, but not necessarily limited to:

Region Directories / Recruitment.
Regional Forum / Website Directory.

Issues relating to nation and region configurations / customisable fields and ownership, such as:

Discussion of witty or apt comments for mottos and other customisable fields.
Showing off / discussing parody nations.
Descriptions / discussion of puppets and about others' puppets.
Description of non-RP-related national characteristics.
Flag Services.
Map Services.

Discussion of methods that people use to occupy their time in the Game.
Discussions about semi-IC themed regions.
Discussions about region hopping (not just Bunny, there are plenty of region hoppers with much smaller, more focused circuits).
Miscellaneous issues involving use of the NS World game engine.

But not forum-based role-play. If you have moved some UN nations into someone else's region and have assumed control, that belongs here. If you have sent some armoured divisions on their way to someone's nation's capital, that belongs in NS or II. This forum exists so that NS World players can have a semi-IC forum to themselves without RP, for which there are already two forums in existence.

This is just my take on things, but I feel the "real" action in NS is about people - specifically, those who have a nation with UN membership - which ensures "one person, one vote".

You can RP with just one nation, especially if you've had it long enough that it has a large population. You can have as many puppets as you want. But growing your region, the internal politics of becoming delegate, region crashing and defending yourself and your allies against invasion - that's teamplay, and the aspect I find most interesting and challenging.

It's nice to have a forum for it. :)

There are certain issues that allow you to upgrade these things (but sometimes at the expense of another). For example, I got an issue yesterday about the discovery of a uranium mine. I could:

1. Bulldoze the rainforest on top of it. :headbang:
2. Keep the rainforest.
3. Mine a small part and leave most of the rainforest intact. :D

I chose choice 3, and the next day I saw that my economy had risen, but in my nation's description it noted that my national animal was on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

Another issue was pretty straight-forward, and I had to choose which department to give more funds to. For example, I could increase funds in military, or education, etc..

Just as a side-note, when RPing with your nation in a war, you should keep in mind a few things: Your nation's size, economy, and whether or not it has attributes that affiliate with the military, I.E. compulsive military service.

Hi. Welcome to NationStates. There is nothing in the game mechanics that simulate buying and selling. Buying and selling is done by roleplay. You'll see in the International Incidents forum several threads of players who who sell things. If you see something you want, you just make a post (example (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7520865&postcount=323)) and the player who started the thread will either confirm or deny your order.

As to money, some players have made calculators to help you judge your economy. Each one will probably give you different results, but you'll have an idea of your economy. Here are the ones I know of:

http://www.pipian.com/stuffforchat/gdpcalc.php
http://twr.1colony.com/ver8/calc8.0.html
http://www.thirdgeek.com/nseconomy.php?nation=
http://www.sunsetrpg.com/nsxmlparser.php
http://www.sunsetrpg.com/economystatistics.php

You should also note, a defense budget is not entirely used to buy stuff. Procurement should probably be in the 20%-30% range of a defense budget.

There seem to be a number of threads recently addressing two-year anniversaries. While it's nice to see some of the reports from players who were active very early in the game, I don't think we necessarily want to turn Gameplay into the Anniversary Forum.

Can some of these be combined? Can we have a Two Year Anniversary rolling thread that people could add to as they reach the milestone, or do we actually want each nation's history listed separately?

If this spawns a long discussion, I'll split it off later (as I just did with all the off-topic stuff in this thread), but for now I think this is an appropriate place for such a discussion.

So, would here (this board, not this thread) be the right place to suggest features for the game (like people's economy calculators for example, something that adds to the game, without changing the way it works or cause any compulsory changes), or would it go in Technical?

Actually, this would go in the Got Issues? forums... but alas, I'll answer it here for you. No, you can't go back and change an issue selection once it's updated; you'll just have to wait for the issue to come back up again for you to be able to pick another choice. If your issue is still in queue, and hasn't updated, then, you can still change it before the update.

Second, go to "settings" and type in your custom title where the drop-down menu was.

I wouldn't suggest doing so, seeing as there are thousands upon thousands of regions, some of which are deleted over updates. It would probably get a little too confusing, keeping it updated, and would take a heck of a lot of time to make sure that each region still exists.

If you do end up creating one though, it would go here, in Gameplay.

That's an RP army. A regional army requires lots of hard work and time.

Founders (and ONLY FOUNDERS) can make a series of posts on their regional board to clear spam off of the board. It's essentially spam, but with the crucial distinction that it says "Founder Clearing Spam" or something similar. If you don't do it that way, the Moderators will most likely delete you.

Gruenberg
07-09-2005, 20:45
Two good uses of dossiers are:

- recruiting: you can keep a track of who you've TGed, to avoid spamming;
- UN lobbying: you can keep a track of who you've TGed, to avoid spamming.

You could also use it, for example, to put a list of people you plan to invite to an RP, of known invaders/defenders, of your puppets...the dossier can have many uses.

It's all roleplaying. You either vote on a UN proposal if you're a UN member, get involved in regional politics, or you roleplay on here. It's not a traditional kind of browser-based game.

SNLA']How do i play this game, is it all role playing ?

No, it's not all role-playing, but there is a heavy RP emphasis. For war, trade and so on, then it's all RP. However, there are other ways to get involved:

1. Gameplay. This involves invasion and defending of regions, using UN nations. The best way to learn about this is to read the stickies in this forum, and then join a region dedicated to one of the two sides.
2. Debating. In the General forum, there are many debates (and more light-hearted topics), and no RPing is done.
3. UN. There is some RP in UN debates, but you don't need to do any. You can simply debate the textual merits of UN resolutions in the UN forums.

If you don't even want to go on the forums, then you can still have a lot of fun answering issues, voting on resolutions, and interacting with regional friends.

For me, the best part of the game is the off site forums. Many of the larger regions such as Canada, Allied States of EuroIslanders, etc. have incredibly active offsite forums. Join these regions and then join these forums. You can really get to know all of the people in your region very well this way.

In addition, some of these are defender/invader regions. Pick your side (defender is better :) ) and join one of these. Good luck.

Hello,
I am relatively new to NS so pardon me if I ask a few dumb questions. First, I've seen a lot about the UN and think it's a good idea. However, is every proposal that passes completely binding? In other words is there a way to side step any resolutions I don't agree with?

Also, in regards to regions do you think it is wise to join an already existing one or create your own. I have created my own already but it's just me. If I should stay in my own created region how should I go about promoting my region?

Finally, what is role playing? I know the name is fairly self-explanatory, but how does it affect you NS experience and what does it usually involve?

Thanks to anyone who replies!

There's no game supported war, where you have troops and lose soldiers and such. Instead, people can choose to roleplay war and diplomatic interactions in the International Incidents and NationStates Forums.

If you don't want to go to war, then on the Jolt forums you can participate in the UN or perhaps General discussions of RL issues. Or you can participate in your regional government, which would likely have its own offsite forum.

A better source is The One-Stop Rules Shop, which lists not only the feeders but the Warzones as well. Just because I like making more work for myself, here's a complete list:
the Pacific
The North Pacific
The East Pacific
The South Pacific
The West Pacific
The Rejected Realms
Lazarus
Warzone Africa
Warzone Airspace
Warzone Asia
Warzone Australia
Warzone Europe
Warzone Sandbox
Please note that the word "the" is an essential part of those feeder region names. "North Pacific" exists as a player-created region, as do all the other "the"-less pacifics and "Rejected Realms". There are other random oceanic names (Central Pacific, The Atlantic, etc) that players have created. Also, there are a few 'unofficial' warzones that aren't on the list above. Don't advertise there either.

Your population increases every day you stay alive. About 3 months gets you to 500 million.

There's no in-game way to exchange embassies, so it won't be able to affect any of your stats. You *can* exchange endorsements, which will affect your influence.

Endorsement swapping is looked down upon in some regions as it sends out the message that you are trying to overthrow the Delegate.

So I'd be careful if you plan to send out telegrams asking for endorsements and just endorse a few people and hope they return it.

It seems that most of the issues that are submitted (and then I receive) are of the nature that the choices are:

A. Agree with my utopian ideas

B. Continue to eat babies and kill kittens

If a third choice is offered, its rarely a middle of the road choice, they leave out the "kill kittens" . The options are rarely realistic or viable and I find most times that rather than allow someone else to pigeon-hole my nation, I must dismiss the issue rather than dealing with it.

I have about 175.984 questions, but I'll only make a few:confused:

If I join the U.N, do I have to abide to their laws and proposals (I suppose I'll have to, right) but do I have any influence/vote? Can I opt out once I've entered?

How do the economy/international trade works? And the military? Can I be militarily invaded? How can I build up my military, if possible? Is there any way to measure it?

And whats this "region" thing about? I mean, is it just like proposing mutually abiding laws and treaties, joint international/U.N representation, and stuff like that?

Thanks!!.

If I join the U.N, do I have to abide to their laws and proposals (I suppose I'll have to, right)

Short answer: Yes. If you want a longer answer, there's a more detailed explanation of compliance in the UN Reference Guide (found in the UN forum).

but do I have any influence/vote?

You have 1 vote in the UN (unless you're a regional Delegate).

Can I opt out once I've entered?

Yes. You can resign at any time.

How do the economy/international trade works? And the military? Can I be militarily invaded? How can I build up my military, if possible? Is there any way to measure it?

You can do those things through roleplay. For more information, see the stickies in the International Incidents forum.

And whats this "region" thing about? I mean, is it just like proposing mutually abiding laws and treaties, joint international/U.N representation, and stuff like that?

You can do a lot of things with a region, but the ones that are almost always done are joint international (alliances or wars with other regions) and joint UN representation (collective voting).

Look man I know what the regional influences are for and how they affect gameplay. I want a list of all the different classifications. Your links didn't help.

Your links didn't help.

Your question was answered in the first link, and linked in the second. The fact that you lack the patience to read a long thread is hardly our problem.

The answer you seek is here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=11014677#post11014677). Note that it is not the answer you asked for, but it is the answer you're getting.

Ok fair enough. There's really no reason to hold back a list of the different rankings. The calculations for the way you get there ok hide that but the list? Weak. I'll take it as it is though.

Most games don't expose all their formulae because it turns the game into number-crunching. This isn't exactly a new concept.

I understand not wnating to release the formula of how you get a certain ranking. I wouldn't want to play a game where all the math majors would be at the top. I'm just at a loss for understanding how a list of the rankings top to bottom would help them. Sure they would know where they stand compared to others in their region but what good does that do really? That's all I wanted to know is where I stand compared to everyone else in my region.

Is there a way one may change the answers to the questions posed when you created your nation? Also, I think having more than two issues a day would be great, possibly 4.
