How old is your nation?

Bonstock
27-12-2003, 06:08
In IC terms...

Not how old as in months in real life, but in roleplay terms. For example, Bonstock has been around *supposedly* for about 36 years.

In that time, our population has grown from 5 million to 1.2 billion or so.

I've spent some time figuring that my population started out with half males and half females, all around the same age. They all married each other, and each couple had twelve children over a course of sixteen years. For a young, tiny, impoverished nation, that may be OK.

So, we start out with 2.5 million women, and each has twelve kids, so that's 30 million children. I have now a total of 35 million people in my nation. Around this time, late June or so, my nation purchased our first weapons: some coastal patrol boats and MLRS systems from Kelanthia. I consider this about 20 years ago in IC terms. So, how do I come from 35 million 20 years ago to 1.2 billion now?

Well, I could just clone people, but remember that I am a young, impoverished nation at this point. So, I figure that my younger generation starts having children at age twelve. I'm the dictator here, remember! So, all of my people start having children at an astounding rate: each mother has three children every year, and sustains this for twenty years. By now, the older generation is too old, so the youngest generation must contribute. This still leaves me with 1.05 billion people in my nation. Still not enough, so I now figure a few more years have past. My nation is now 38 years old, growing at a steady 52.5 per year. One in every 33 of my people are under the age of 22. My nation is really wierd.

At this point, you many be wondering, "Bonstock, how the hell do you survive?" I don't know. I don't think Max Barry or whoever created NS thought this all out.

So how old is your nation? And please, don't go into detail on your birthrates. It will only depress me.

For my main nation at least, 1 RL hour = 1 NS month + 1 NS hour, meaning 1 RL day is 2 NS years, plus that day. Also, the moment of my nation's creation, March 11, 2003 at 5:30 pm, is the same for both RL and NS. This makes my nation in the year 2584 at the time of this post.

The first record of civilization in Imperal Teras is dated as back as 13,000 years. The nation itself was only created 86 Years ago.
Walmington on Sea
27-12-2003, 08:33
From the Concise History of Walmington on Sea, published by Black Gull:

AD 1490s- British (primarily English Protestant) explorers, possibly seeking the new world (some say Welshmen or Bristol fish merchants discovered the Americas) make land-fall on the north Atlantic island now called Walmington on Sea.

1490s- The mainland, and the island now called Southend attract primarily Protestant settlers from Britain, as well as numbers of Jews recently expelled from Spain, and others fleeing the revived Inquisition. Tiny Newry island receives a Catholic majority.

1497- The Protestant Church of Walmington established, King Godfrey I crowned and made head of the church. His domain includes the whole of the mainland, while Southend (then New Eire) is disputed by its Catholic population.

And then in 1505- The Walmingtonian War ends with the capture of Newry Island by Protestant forces, helped by the first vessels of the Royal Walmingtonain Navy. Evidence of Spanish assistance to the Newrians is reportedly uncovered.

..And thus modern Walmington on Sea was born, and only became centre of an empire a hundred odd years later, after American colonies in the 1570s all failed.

IRL, Loop is almost a year old, in fact we turn 1 year old Jan 25th.

or time, I measure 1 real day = approx 6 months.
so on Jan 25th Loop is 182 years old I should perhaps adjust it so a year is a hundred years.

Enodia is a pretty old nation. I've never bothered to put a date on the Battle of Theresienstadt (the battle which won our independence), but it would most likely be any time from the mid 1300s to mid 1500s - the sort of time when fiefdoms in continental Europe changed hands rather regularly.

My main nation IRL turns a year just after the new year (5 Jan), IC terms about 133 years, I'd say.
Catholic Europe
27-12-2003, 12:03
In RP terms, Catholic Europe (as it goes in the Middle East history) has been around for about 2,000 years.

(A year in RL terms)
The Lowland Clans
27-12-2003, 13:13
In RL terms, the Allied States of the Lolwand Clans has existed in one way or form for about 400 or so years, just after the end of the English Civil War

Our beloved Empire of Great Valeria is as old as our beloved and impressive Crepe Mountains and many years' older than the Empire of Freudia-Slippe which has no mountains, only barren hillocks populated with starving, emaciated, peasants.

Sincerely,
Ordo Nobilis,
Commander of the Office of The Empress Valeria XXXV
The Brotherhood of Nod

Difficult to say...the Brotherhood is already thousands of years old. Exact numbers are not known (to the outside world).

Nod, you're still around?

Anyways,
The Resurrected Lands of Nanakaland was originally created March 16, 2003. Nanakaland was deleted due to inactivity sometime this summer (when I moved). I got Nanakaland back in early November.

Since 9 A.D. when the Roccorian City-states broke away from the yoke of the Dorians and formed one of the first Republics in the world.

1 Roccorian day=1 NS day

We follow the game calendar.

OOC: How exactly long is a NS year? Is there any set amount of time?
Archaic Slang Words

My nation is a few years old, but it's a very interesting way in which I handle it...

You see, the current government is frozen in place (because I'm too lazy to reorganize it after all that election and time flowing by crap, etc. etc.) but time passes as 1 day=1 NS year eventwise. People's age, it doesn't change, but the nations events change on a day to year ratio.

Nope, some people say a year is one day, others that a month equals a year. Most people see time as fluid depending on the RP situation.
27-12-2003, 22:49
Depends - humans first settled Wyrmberg in the Middle Ages, but Firedrakes - who are fully sentient and considered citizens of Wyrmberg - have lived there since the time of Middle Earth.

Well put. I usually take a RL month to be an IC year when doing construction work or building military forces, but in some RP it gets so drawn-out that an IC day lasts more than a week RL-time...
Petsburg
27-12-2003, 22:54
The Three States that make up Petsburg Have been around since about 1563, or so the records say, but Petsburg it self(assuming today is 2013 in NS time) has been here since 1913
Myrth
27-12-2003, 22:57
Well, I like to say that The United Socialist Republics of Myrth as they are now known were formed from 4 originally independant nations.
The largest nation, Myrth, had conquered its neighbors; Dyzantia, Gebraltica and Thurland by the mid-nineteenth century.
After the November Revolution of 1922, the 4 nations were united under the name Myrth, although the original territories still have power to enact 2nd level legislation through their own elected Parliaments.
The main government authority is The House of the Party, who are unelected members of the Communist Party.

27-12-2003, 23:34
Somewhere between 15 and 20 years old. June 1, 2003, the RL founding date, corresponds with July 2003 in RP terms, and for the most part I've made one RL day equal to one RP month, making today equal to December 2020. Recently, time has become slightly more fluid, so that's why I say 15-20 years.
Zachnia

Zachnia was first settled in about 560 bce by a group of nomadic pirates. However, it recognized its gaining of independance on September 7th 1645

In RL time it was founded on March 18th, 2003. However, I see it as about five years old.
