Is it that time again? Game Mod Olympics!

[violet]
24-04-2008, 07:58
It's been a long, dark 18 months since the last Game Mod Olympics (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=498661). This was actually scheduled for last year, but during the torch relay, protestors snatched the eternal flame and scampered away with it. For the last six months, special police have been leaving no house unransacked and village unburned in an effort to find it--and at last they have!

An alert, wary crowd rises to its feet as Special Inquisitor [Classified] runs into the arena, bearing the somewhat battered torch proudly aloft! Wild, scripted applause breaks out--magnificent! It's such an electric moment, not even the gentle spattering of blood droplets from the torch can ruin it. Special Inquisitor [Classified] runs a lap of the arena, and--look at that! He still has time to jot down the names of spectators who do not appear to be as Happy and Enthusiastic as the government ordered. How dutiful!

With the preliminaries over, here come the athletes! There was some talk of boycotts, given the contentious location of this Game Mod Olympics, but all that's left behind now--it's time for action! The crowd oohs over Frisbeeteria, a legendary competitor in past Olympics and still looking fighting fit, despite perhaps getting past his prime. And bouncing past--Katganistan! Those who said she'd never legally get a living cat's tail grafted to her buttocks didn't count on this country's fine back alley chop shops!

First up are the UN events. The competitors take their places... but wait, what's this? A squadron of blue helicopters are descending from the sky! Is this part of the ceremony? Wait... they seem to have "UN" painted on the side... they're landing now... men and women in dark suits are emerging... oh no! They're UN lawyers! The crowd screams in panic as the lawyers begin handing out cease and desist letters, demanding no association with the competition going on here today!

Finally, it's all straightened out, and the lawyers step back into their helicopters. We can only watch in awe as they fly away, marvelling that world poverty is so under control that they can take time out to attend our Olympics.

So let's continue! With... the "NationStates Organizational Body We Had Before World Assembly" events!

3 : Melkor Unchained

It's Fris vs Kat for most of the way, as the two favorites jostle for position. Frisbeeteria elbows Katganistan aside in "Cheat Checks," trips her just before the finish line in "Ejections," and double-teams her with The Most Glorious Hack in "Proposals Removed," but Kat uses her genetically enhanced tail to vault ahead in "Warnings Issued"!

Frisbeeteria: 3 gold, 1 silver
Katganistan: 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver
Scolopendra: 2 bronze
Euroslavia: 1 bronze

Now for the always popular Life & Death events! As a special feature of this Olympics, organizers have promised that any crowd members who fail to smile at all times will participate in this event!

--- Nations Deleted ---

Ah, some things never change... when it comes to obliterating nations, Frisbeeteria is a machine, but when it comes time to restore them to life, he's got other things to do. Kat, however, rushes from nation to nation, tenderly breathing life into their governmental lungs.

Although the Big Two are dominating, just as pundits predicted, let's not overlook the plucky performance of Scolopendra. With all thirteen million of his little legs scuttling away, he's picked up four bronze medals already!

Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 2 silver
Katganistan: 2 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver
Scolopendra: 4 bronze
Euroslavia: 1 bronze

Now on to the events lovingly described by those in the know as "Miscellaneous"!

--- Issues Accepted ---
19 : Sirocco
1 : The Most Glorious Hack

--- Telegrams Sent ---
5188 : Katganistan
4059 : Frisbeeteria
1009 : Scolopendra

98 : Reploid Productions

--- Warnings Issued ---

483 : Euroslavia
217 : Reploid Productions
62 : Melkor Unchained
29 : GMC Military Arms
21 : Sirocco
5 : SalusaSecondus

Sirocco starts his pet event by glaring around forcefully at anyone who dares take to the starting line. All other competitors shrink away, except for Hack, who runs a respectful distance behind, stopping whenever Sirocco looks around.

In "Telegrams Sent" and "Warnings Issued," though, Katganistan smashes all comers! Perhaps it's age creeping up on Fris--or perhaps it's Kat's ability to talk twice as fast by using a complicated series of grunts and meeows? One thing's for sure: when it comes to warnings, Kat's got it covered.

Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 4 silver
Katganistan: 4 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze
Sirocco: 1 gold
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver
Scolopendra: 6 bronze
Euroslavia: 1 bronze

With only a handful of events left, Fris and Kat are neck and neck!

--- Watchlist Modifications ---
1286 : Katganistan
973 : Frisbeeteria

254 : Reploid Productions
221 : Melkor Unchained
109 : The Most Glorious Hack
19 : SalusaSecondus
19 : Sirocco
8 : GMC Military Arms
1 : Pythagosaurus

It's almost the exact same results as last time! The crowd gasps at the sheer predictability, just like they were told to! As we've established, when it comes to being kind and helpful, Katganistan takes the gold. Fris is close, but left cursing there aren't more events where you have to stomp on people.

Katganistan: 7 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze
Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 7 silver
Sirocco: 1 gold
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver
Scolopendra: 9 bronze
Euroslavia: 1 bronze

Amazing! With only one event left, Katganistan takes an unassailable lead! For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, Frisbeeteria has been usurped! All that's left for the great champion is to pull himself together for one last victory in the final event!

--- All Moderator Actions ---
106217 : Katganistan
76470 : Frisbeeteria
20170 : Scolopendra
7748 : Euroslavia
4700 : The Most Glorious Hack
3381 : Reploid Productions
2298 : Sirocco
1712 : Melkor Unchained
935 : GMC Military Arms
668 : SalusaSecondus
131 : Pythagosaurus
25 : [violet]
7 : Karmabaijan

But no! He can't even do that! Kat flips past in a series of cat-wheels, mewling with delight! In fact, she racks up so many "Moderator Actions" that she clocks the scoreboard, ruining its 5-digit formatting! The competitors gasp, waiting for the inevitable screen explosion, and for Kat to run a lap of honor in slow-motion to inspiring music while flames and glass rain down around her... but it doesn't happen. It's just bad formatting. Still--amazing!

Katganistan: 8 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze (last time: 5-6-0)
Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 8 silver (last time: 6-6-0)
Sirocco: 1 gold (last time: 1-0-0)
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver (last time: 1-0-0)
Scolopendra: 10 bronze (last time: 0-0-0)
Euroslavia: 1 bronze (last time: 0-0-11)

And look at Scolopendra! He's running about in excitement... in fact, he's taking his ten bronze medals over to the eternal flame... he's melting them down! And... and he's pouring the molten bronze over his body! He's bronzed himself! There is now a magnificant, bronze statue of Scolopependra towering over the stadium! Fantastic!

What an incredible Olympics! Since September 2006, there were 224,462 moderator actions performed and 35,706 player and automated requests. Thank you and congratulations to all our mods!

I've been teaching her my evil ways. She's a much better stomper now than in 2006, and she haz varry shiny b00ts (http://photos1.blogger.com/hello/299/5329/640/Faire%20Garb-5%20lo%20res.jpg).

Credit where credit is due department: Had the last Olympics happened a year ago, I might have done a bit better. For the last 12 months, Kat has been the unmistakable marathon moderator, handling probably closer to 80% of all Game Mods tasks, and stepping up quite a bit on Forum moderation too. She'd have walked away with everything except Issues and UN Proposal deletions.

A shout out to our excellent Forum Mods as well, who are excluded from the Game Mod Olympics solely on the basis that Jolt doesn't provide metrics on the actions that they perform. Well done, Hotrodia, Ardchoille, and Tsaraine, who would have been medalists had we been able to measure all the time and thought they put into settling disputes and being generally helpful.

Hey, you're the one going on and on about n00bs. I highly doubt you'll find me mentioning them prior to a response to you post.

You mention your post count and on-line age to prove you're not a n00b and then comment how that isnt a measure. Pardon my giggling.

He's mad because it was activity like this that made us all leave NS and start the Social Spam Alliance in the first place.

Also, he never said they were never a measure. He said you shouldn't use them as a measure. But since you are using them as a measure, he is well within logical reasoning to counter your argument using the premise of your argument to prove that he is, in fact, not a n00b, as he has been on NS longer than you have.

You have proven yourself a n00b by acting n00bish: attempting to prove your superiority using an argument that is not logically valid, which was subsequently proven to be logically invalid by proving his own superiority to you using your own rules, which shows the contradiction in your argument, which proves it to be invalid, and then trying to counter the proven invalidity of your argument with another logical fallacy.

We know our own self-worth and do not have to gain self-esteem by measuring ourselves against one another using some arbitrary and misleading system. Who are you trying to convince with your claims of superiority?

I can also say with some amount of confidence that both Lapse and I are older than you in both forum age and actual age. If you do happen to be older than us in forum age, you should know better than to cite a postcount as a claim to superiority as there is always someone with a bigger postcount than you and always ways to get a bigger postcount without contributing anything of any value. If you happen to be actually older than us I have to question why someone of your age is still spending time on an internet forum used mostly by pubescents and young-adults, and, worse, trying to establish your superiority over them.

Furthermore, I would suggest that it is, in fact, you that have had your "nerve touched," which is evidenced by your overreaction to what are clearly statements made in jest.

Compare that to the above ridiculous attacks. (I love the inherent contradiction in the age comments.) Apparently, because you two can't recognie rasmasc, I'm overreacting.

(Rasmasc is sarcasm with the letters jumbles. Told you, you couldn't recognize it.)

Sarcasm is difficult to pull off in print.

I submit that you have failed and will subsequently sacrifice you for it.

If you could actually sacrifice me, it probably would please the mods. Most of them, especially Ard, hate me with a white hot passion.

Not true. It's more of a blood red sort of passion.

I think our only choice is to let that passion loose and see what color it is.

Or I could start a thread - What color is your passion for Jocabia?

How long do you think it would it take for that thread to devolve so far that it needed locked?

Actually, I was betting that talk of passion would probably lead to sexually explicit comments, but I suppose there may be some passionate opinions, too. :)

Given my prose style, I think it would probably be purple.

But ... passion? Surely you realise even lowly forum mods have passed far, far beyond mere human emotions.

The over-enthusiasm lay in the building of a quote pyramid. I smote it. It is not an acceptable sacrifice. As for the increasingly spammy posts, I ated them.

Now get back to the celebration and worship of the Olympians, hut-hut-hut!

Spammers, cease and desist! (phrase copyright the UN).

Meanwhile, here in the commentators' box, have I any tips for next year's events? Yes indeedy!

Place your bets early, while the odds are still favourable. I reckon Hack has just been lying low, building up his strength. I expect he'll secretly hone his skills in the first half of the year, then come through with a massive burst of speed, peaking just as the trials begin -- can Sirocco rest easy on his laurels? I think not!

Don't overlook Reppy, though. She's positioned herself securely in the middle of the pack, comfortable with letting others have their moment of glory, but there's no reason such a seasoned contestant can't once again harness the stamina and experience that would make her performance as impressive as those we've seen from that crowd-pleasing, thrill-seeking and mysterious contestant, the Bastard Mod from Hell.

And once the Get Euro Some Decent Running-Shoes Campaign yields fruit, it'll take a lot to stop that tenacious little battler.

(Memo self: look into purchase of Super-Irresistible Katnip Treets, track, for scattering on.)

Duh. Euro is going to win, but using an off time to deat everyone and then resurrect their nations a half dozen times, thus giving Euro three sure golds.

I did not want to ruin a light-hearted thread by waving the banhammer around.

I do not want to lock it, as there may still be folk who want to say "well done" to the Game Mods, and the Game Mods deserve all the kudos they get.

To make it as clear as possible: RhynoD, Lapse, do not post any more spam.

EDIT: Thank you, Jocabia. I'm going for a walk.

Hmmm...I hope all of the competitors this year were tested for the use of performance-enhancing internet connections, in line with NSADA (NationStates Anti-Doping Agency*) protocols.

;13637213']As we've established, when it comes to being kind and helpful, Katganistan takes the gold. Fris is close, but left cursing there aren't more events where you have to stomp on people. And considering the overall outcome, I think there are life lessons to be learned here.

I, Supreme Councilor Jorrus, wish to announce that we'll be setting up a statue of the goddess Katganistan in our new Malkir Temple of Knowledge with the formation of the Huntarian Republic. This Statue will replace the plans of building the statue of the old Gunslinger God Frisbeeteria, in honor of her glorious victory.

OOC:
Cool! Congrats to Kat's victory this year. May we drink blood wine together in the glory of Kahless!
